Trunk Show!!

On Thursday, November 12th, the authority on Twitter for all things handmade will host a Virtual Trunk Show on Etsy.com showcasing great gift ideas for everyone. The Trunk Show will take place in Etsy.com’s Virtual Labs in the Gallery room (http://www.etsy.com/virtual_labs.php). The show starts at 8 PM EST.

“We wanted to really make it easy for people to find unique gifts this year, and thought that a Virtual Trunk Show would be perfect,” says Etsy Twitter Team Co-Leader Kristen Evans, owner of FirebirdHouse Designs. “Grab a cup of cocoa and get a jumpstart on your list without having to fight crowds and traffic!”

The team, which uses Twitter to expand its reach to a global audience, thinks that this holiday season, people are looking for quality and a good price. “We really want to introduce people to the diversity and quality of handmade items,” says Vickie Porter, the team’s leader and the artist/owner behind the recycled domino jewelry of In My Head Studios. “You can find great gifts and stocking stuffers for even the most difficult people on your list, in every price range. Many of the artists will be on hand to meet 'in person' and chat about their work.” The categories being featured are For Her, For Him, For Kids, For Anyone, and Under $50. You are sure to find the right item for anyone on your list.

Vickie feels that encouraging people to make handmade items part of their holiday is important. “The handmade lifestyle really offers something unique, and we want to be sure and share that with the rest of the world, on Twitter and off.”

You’ll need an account with Etsy.com to attend. Don’t worry! It’s free and easy to sign up! Get there early so you can get a good seat!

There will be fantastic handmade prizes, too! See you there!

Handmade For the Holidays- Gifts and Goodies For One of a Kind Celebrations

Ah, the holiday season...chestnuts roasting on an open fire, cocoa frothy with melted marshmallows, the deep woodsy smell of fresh pine, bumper to bumper traffic, crowded shopping malls, endless gift lists...

If the last three things on that list didn't exactly make you think "winter wonderland", the team may have a solution for you this year! We want to help you get a jumpstart on your holidays this week, with some great gift ideas, awesome recipes, and creative ways to wrap gifts that will leave you with more time to sit by the fire (and more money in your pocket!)

While the holidays are now celebrated with both religious and secular traditions, in the early Middle Ages, the calendar was dominated by Christmas-related dates, including the forty days prior to December 25th, known as The Days of St Martin (now Advent).

St Martin's Punch

1 bottle each of cranberry juice, orange juice and mixed berries juice. (Adjust depending on number to serve)
6 Tablespoons of brown sugar.
1/2- 1 teaspoon each of mixed spices, cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg. ( to taste )
6 - 12 cloves,
1 - 2 lemons,
2-3 oranges sliced thin

Mix the ingredients together, layer thnly sliced fruits on top, heat gently in a pan or crockpot and serve.

Feasts, too, were a part of the celebration, featuring roasted ducks and meats, vegetables, and dressings, such as this tasty chestnut stuffing, from Jusshar:

CHESTNUT DRESSING

4 c. coarse bread crumbs
3 c. boiled chestnuts (broken up)
3 tbsp. butter
1/2 lb. sausage meat
2 med. diced onions
1 c. celery, cut fine
Salt and pepper to taste
Poultry seasoning
Hot water

Melt butter and cook onions 5 minutes. Add sausage meat and cook 5 minutes more. Mix bread, celery, chestnut pieces. Combine and moisten. Stuff turkey or chicken with dressing or cook in baking dish.

NOTE: I always find that I have to buy more chestnuts than I need because I always have a problem with moldy chestnuts. However, if you can get them frozen, you won't have this problem.

and breads such as this one, from pinswithfury

Banana Bread
1 3/4 cup flour
2 t baking powder
1/4 t baking soda
1/4 t salt
1/3 cup butter
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup white sugar
3 eggs
1 cup mashed bananas (usually 3 - 4)

Mix butter and sugar together, add eggs, then bananas. Mix all dry ingredients together, then add gradually to banana mixture. Usually makes more than one loaf. Bake at 375 degree for 30 minutes, or until it springs back on top and is light brown.

For a slightly carmelized effect, sprinkle top of loaf with brown sugar halfway thru the baking process. Try serving with honey butter, or make mini loaves to give as gifts!

The Puritans of later times disapproved so much of the revelry and lavish dinners of Christmas celebrations in England that when they arrived in the New World, they went so far as to outlaw Christmas in Boston from 1659 to 1681!

Fortunately for all of us, the disapproval of holiday celebrations gradually disappeared, although the season as we now know it came into being in the later 1800s. In 1850, Godey's Lady's Book, republished an engraving of the British Royal family gathered around a decorated evergreen, (after Americanizing the scene by removing Queen Victoria's Crown, and Princh Albert's mustache!), introducing the idea to women all across America. By 1870, the tradition had taken root, with gifts packaged beneath tree.

So here are some unique, handmade items you can put under the tree just for Her, whether she loves a touch of luxury, or a little casual fun!

You can really give her your heart with this glowing felted bowl from HandmadebySandi :

Shop Of The Week: Jenco13

Visiting Jenco13 is a sure way to feel a serious need for something warm. Multi-colored shawls, scarves (with pockets!), cup cozies, cuddly baby blankets and more fill this Etsy store.

Jen freely admits that most of her items narrowly miss being kept. "I love each item I make and sometimes find them very hard to part with! I spend anywhere between 6-8 hours on a scarf to make sure my stitches are even and consistent. If it's not up to my standards, I rip out the stitches until I'm satisfied. I only sell things that I would use myself. When I'm done making things, my husband, Joe, normally has to remind me I already have a million scarves and cup cozies of my own!"

Jen credits her mom, a graphic designer and artist herself, with inspiring her. "She is amazing with colors! We try to get together at least once every 6 months to do an art day for the girls."

Husband Joe is also supportive. "He is an amazing supporter of my art work and never says to me, 'You're crocheting again?' He helps me pick out what my next projects are going to be."

Jen ships her work internationally and is happy to do custom items. "I love to take custom orders from people when they see something new that I have not thought about making before."

As head of the Etsy Twitter Team's PR Committee, Jen is an avid user of Twitter and has a few tricks of the trade to share.

"Each month I go on to friendorfollow.com to see who has been following me, who are my friends, and who is not following me. I first figure out who is no longer using their accounts and get rid of those friends, so that I have room to add those who are following me. I only spend about 30 minutes or so, because you can really get caught up doing things on Twitter!"

She also makes it a point to respond. "I ALWAYS respond to those who RT my information, recommend me for #followfridays or DM me. I feel its important to make those connections on Twitter."

Jen credits persistence and determination for helping her get her store going. "I am the little engine that could! I never give up on things. When times are tough, I stick to my goal and keep on trucking."

Uncommon Talents Part 3

Not only can they say it and send it in 140 characters or less, but the Etsy Twitter Team has an abundance of hidden talents, skills and life experiences. Let’s get to know some of them “up close and personal.” Consider yourself warned…

A good neighbor will babysit. A great neighbor will babysit twins. ~Author Unknown

@inmyheadstudios and her sister are "mirror image twins," rather than fraternal twins, due to their right and left handedness, how their finger prints line up if they put their hands together and other physical mannerisms that mirror each other.

Once they switch seats in class and took each other’s spelling test. As the test was ending, a classmate stood up and announced that they had switched seats. The teacher would never have caught on if the little stoolie hadn’t ratted them out!

prettywhimsical is the mother of 13-year-old identical twin girls. At birth, they weighed a total of 13.1 pounds. (Good thing that there were two of them, or that would have been one LARGE baby!)

curiousmess is pregnant with twins. (I am doing everything in my power not to make a smart comment about being pregnant with twins and having the moniker “curious mess.”) We are so delighted for her and wish her good health throughout her pregnancy with her two precious babies.

Our perfect companions never have fewer than four feet. ~Colette

TheCheckerdRabbit has a pet Dutch Bunny named Piper that is half pure white and half chocolate brown. She looks a bit checkered. Guess from where her shop name came…

WellspringCreations and her family have a parakeet because it flew onto their front door screen. They call him the uninvited guest who never left. You will be happy to know that HE is very happy and has his people well trained.

jenco13 use to have a horse named Gracie when she was growing up on Long Island. Her friends all thought it was strange that she had a horse on Long Island and also that she considered Gracie as her best friend.

FromNancysHeart had no pets as a child – unless dust bunnies count. (Sorry, Nancy, they don’t.)

I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by. ~Douglas Adams

PunkyJane wrote and self-published a children's book called Sally the Sheep and the Very Cloudy Day .

<------JaybirdDesigns is a published crochet designer with items in Crochet World, Crochet Today and Interweave Crochet. She also has a booklet with Leisure Arts titled Top-sy Turvy.

FromNancysHeart has written three “children’s stories” with her five-year-old nephew. After having many stories read to him, he wanted to start writing stories of his own. And so, she purchased a simple composition book for him. Their first title is "The 12 days of Pasta." They followed it up with "Ralph's Farm" and are now working on "We Gave a Cat a Candy Corn." (That last one is sure to be #1 on the Amazon Best Seller List!)

lindab142 has been working on a book about cats for about eight years and still hasn’t finished it. (Linda, honey, almost is only in horseshoes.)

Without music, life would be a mistake. ~Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche

lostmitten has played the piano since she was 4 years old. She also plays the guitar, clarinet and bass. At one time, she was in a band and toured across part of Canada. They also recorded their own CD!

bellflowertextiles was a concert violinist on the competitive circuit as a child. She started playing at the age of five, gave her first solo concert at age 11, started competing in 7th grade, then burned out badly and gave it all up by the age of 20. Today, she still has perfect pitch and plays five musical instruments: violin, piano, flute, trumpet and harpsichord.

Close Encounters of the Stranger Kind
capecodjewel never met a president, but she did meet the self-proclaimed "King of all Media," Howard Stern. She use to listen to him all the time when he had his radio show in NYC and was very excited to win tickets to attend the first taping of his syndicated radio show. (‘Nuff said.)

Uncommon Talents Part 2

Not only can they say it and send it in 140 characters or less, but the Etsy Twitter Team has an abundance of hidden talents, skills and life experiences. Let’s get to know some of them “up close and personal.” Consider yourself warned…

Just Mystical

I don't know what it is. I believe that it comes from God. I think I'm nothing more than a tool by which energy or this thought processes come in. ~Sylvia Browne

starbabyonline is a 4th generation psychic medium with more than 40 years of reading experience.

When lindab142 was 15, she discovered the author and "sleeping prophet," Edgar Cayce and began reading his books about ESP and psychic energy. Her mom was interested in the topic as well, and they began reading the same books about psychics and mediums. Lindab142 began reading Tarot cards and getting vibes from them. Later, she met a shaman and began to work on her psychic skills – learning to read auras and past lives. When she taps into this energy, she no longer needs cards to pick up vibes.

Just the Unexpected
crochetgal has been involved with the automobiles of American Motors for about 30 years and was Executive Secretary to the CEO of American Motors Owners Association for about eight years. She still owns an original street legal AMX – only one of 900 built – and has been spotted occasionally with it at the local quarter-mile track. (A little dash for cash, crochetgirl?)

Just Plain Awesome
In 1997, dizzlePOP founded the gold (loop) ribbon, what is now the international symbol for Childhood Cancer Awareness. At age seven, just after finishing first grade, her oldest daughter, Kelsey, was diagnosed with leukemia. She died 26 days later – not from cancer, but from the harsh chemotherapy. After she died, dizzlePOP got involved in the world of childhood cancer, becoming the president of a childhood cancer organization in Salt Lake City, and ultimately launching the gold ribbon campaign.

Just Plain Interesting
beadsofglass spent seven years in Honduras. She lived in a small adobe house with pigs and chickens running around and laying eggs on her pillow and cows and bulls in her front yard. She taught English to 20 barefoot mountain kids whom she loved and helped raise money to provide them with shoes, clothes and a chance at high school. Although beadsofglass is NYC born and raised, those were some of the best years of her life.

Just Plain Smart
NikkyLeeDesigns qualified for Mensa five to six years ago. She took their test and found out a few weeks later that she got in. They don't reveal your score; they just let you know that you qualified. (People, to be in Mensa, you have to have an I.Q. in the top 2% of the population – hello!)

Just Plain Cute
When Mikiye was much younger (thank goodness), she was IN LOVE with Shaun Cassidy and, apparently, also John Travolta. She had Shaun Cassidy posters, t-shirts and a pillow case with him on it. She also had her share of Tiger Beat magazines too. Her Mother once told her that she and her best friend would play for hours pretending one was Mrs. Cassidy and one was Mrs. Travolta!

Just Plain Nice
HandmadeBySandi grew up in the city and never saw a farm until she met and married her current husband. Now they are farming full time, donating much of what they grow to local churches.

Just Plain Nuts
threepeats bungee-jumped for the first (and last) time in her life on a visit to New Zealand last October. She was 56 at the time!

NikkyLeeDesigns paraglided off a 3,000 meter mountain in Interlaken, Switzerland in 2000, although she had no previous training in this recreational and competitive sport. Oh, yes, she is afraid of heights, but who could pass up this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. (Just ask me – I could!)

burlapworks loves to go cliff jumping (into water – thank goodness!) in the summer. She used to go cliff jumping on skis when she lived on the west coast of British Columbia.

Just WHAT college did you attend?

FromNancysHeart graduated from Glassboro State College in New Jersey. The school was given a tremendous 200 million dollar endowment by Mr. Rowan, so it became Rowan College. Eventually, it received university status. Each change brought a new diploma for a grand total of – count them – three.

Just Multi-Faceted

I like making a piece of string into something I can wear. ~Author Unknown

RhodesAnnals grew up in a coal mining town and took ballroom dance lessons from the age of 6 until 12. She also sang in the school choir and in local talent competitions. As a member of a local amateur dramatics group, she performed Gilbert and Sullivan. She also used to swim competitively. Now, she knits – which greatly amuses her friends as knitting is still regarded as “a grandma activity” in the area in which she lives. (“And what is wrong with knitting and grandma activities,” she asks - while knitting away and admiring the photos of her little granddaughter.)

Uncommon Talents

Part I
Not only can they say it and send it in 140 characters or less, but the Etsy Twitter Team has an abundance of hidden talents, skills and life experiences. Let’s get to know some of them “up close and personal.” Don't say we didn't warn you...

To David Letterman: We have several candidates for your stupid people tricks segment…

SweetwaterGifts is double jointed and can cross all her fingers over the next knuckles and fold her thumbs back - on both hands all at the same time.

Southpawstudios is a self-taught juggler who thoroughly delights her little toddler with her circus-like feats.

One is just an object; two is a pair; three is a collection…

PunkyJane has an extensive eraser collection that she started in the 5th grade with a friend, and they still occasionally exchange erasers as gifts. She has over 400 in a display case, plus another 20+ in a clear jar in her office. According to this eraser maven, the Sanrio ones are the best!

Foxygknits has a collection of more than 3,000 weird, old ashtrays that live in her master bedroom. (She inhabits the West Wing!) She also has cigarette cases and boxes, lighters, old magazine ads, sheet music and many promotional pieces that were put out by the various cigarette companies. Her goal is to one day curate an exhibit of the 20th century as seen through these items.

geekdetails has a collection of about 30 vintage, functional suitcases that live around her house, including the bedroom and the garage. One was designed specifically as a portable liquor bar and another as a portable coffee bar. You never know what you will find when you open one of her suitcases – unless you first read the label.
Random electric parts, anyone? --------------------->

“I speak two languages, Body and English.” ~Mae West

Charleneanderson knows a fair amount of Hawaiian and can fake her way around the world in about six other languages.

Lostmitten is currently taking a Japanese language course for fun!

FromNancysHeart is learning Spanish by watching telenovellas – Mexican soap operas – on Telemundo. Originally, she was looking for something to watch a few summers ago, and she fell in LOVE with Christian Meir, a very handsome actor. As Nancy didn't have closed caption at the time, she had to start figuring out what they were saying. Recently, they are including closed caption (English subtitles) on the most popular soaps, and it helps a great deal!

Firebirdhouse is fluent in French and lived in the Southwest of France for her senior year of high school.

BORN in New Jer-sey; I was BORN in New Jer-sey…

Frostedtreats hails from Freehold, NJ, Bruce Springsteen's hometown – NOT Asbury as many suppose. So, she can locate many of the places about which he sings. When she was an infant, Bruce held her and gave her parents an autograph mentioning how cute she was.

Another Jersey fact: Jon Bon Jovi use to hit on her Mom at a local music club. “Mom” was WAAY underage at the time (can you say “15”) and using her older sister's ID.

She walks in beauty like the night… ~Lord Byron
JaybirdDesigns was a top 10 finalist for the Beaver County River Regatta beauty pageant when she was 18 and competed in the Miss Majorette of Pennsylvania competition in high school.

Shop Of The Week: Linda B's Beaded Jewelry

Take a virtual step into Linda Blatchford's Etsy shop and you will find yourself surrounded by fun, fresh, beaded creations. Gemstones and Swarovski crystals pair up with sterling silver and unexpected found objects in these one-of-a-kind designs that reflect Linda's love of color and symbolism.

Her initial inspiration often comes from the colors or shapes of her ever-expanding bead collection. "I see an image in my mind and as I create it, I may have to tweak it. I love it when it turns out better than my imagination. If it’s not spiffy, I start over. Now, I’m looking for more recycled items to work with: bottlecaps, pine cones, etc."

In addition to bracelets, earrings, and pendants, Linda also makes wire Kippahs and gorgeous Judaica themed creations that she is happy to customize with favorite colors or gemstones.

An avid Twitter user and dedicated Etsy Twitter Team member, Linda has a few Twitter tricks up her artistic sleeves. " I “converse” on Twitter, in addition to using it as a promotional tool. I use TweetDeck and have several columns tracking my teams and topics of interest. I follow other people’s followers to connect with more people and use bitly.com to see how many people click on my tweets."

Linda recently became the new team leader for the EtsyChai Team and also features fellow artisans weekly on her busy blog, http://linorstorecom.blogspot.com/ , but never lets the weight of a big to-do list weigh down her creativity.

"I am passionate about beading, and find it relaxing and fun! My favorite thing about it is that I can have different projects going on at the same time. Beaded earrings can take about an hour, while other pieces have different components and steps. "
With gift giving just around the corner ( 54 shopping days!), Linda's fabulous designs are sure to please friends and family on your list, as well as brighten up your own holiday mood!

In honor of her November 1 birthday, Linda is offering a week long discount:
20% off purchases totaling $10, excluding shipping
