Are Your Ears Sensitive to Metals?

Many people have sensitivities to metals and the jewelry that's made out of them. If you're one of them, there are some things that you can try that may just get you back into that pair of earrings you so love!

Breast Cancer Awareness Earrings
You can experiment to find out what you CAN wear!

EXPERIMENT:
First, Let your ears heal. If you have extreme sensitivities, check with your doctor first.

Always clean new earring posts/earwires with rubbing alcohol. Then you can try out earrings made with the different types of quality metals: sterling, 14K gold filled (or 14K gold), and, if necessary, argentium silver. Wear each one for a day to see if your ears still react to the metal. (At the FIRST sign of irritation, take the earrings OFF! If you think you have an infection, be sure to check with your doctor.)

You can also try dipping an irritating earwire in clear fingernail polish. Be sure to let them dry thoroughly before you put them in your ears!

Once you find what works for you, you can
* have a jewelry artist replace the earwires of your favorite earrings with earwires that work, or even
* order a special pair of earwires from which you can hang
your earring dangles!

For step by step instructions and some additional information, you can check out my blog on this topic. If you'd like me to help you with the experimentation, you can convo me through my Etsy shop. I'd be happy to help!

Give to Get!

Returning home from a day of filming, I struck up a conversation with a good looking guy, not because he was good looking might I add, but because he was wearing an OrangeRockCorps t-shirt. I have heard about this company on the radio and on Channel 4, it is a company that allows young people to volunteer their time for a couple of hours and in return, they get given tickets to up and coming festivals and concerts.

I asked Courtney what he had done today (I am not psychic, he still had the large sticker with his name written on it, stuck to the top left corner of his t-shirt), he told me that he and his friends painted the walls of some building in Shoreditch. In return for 4 hours work they gained tickets to see Mark Ronson in concert. "Ahh that's really good", I replied and I wished I stopped there but I didn't. The next sentence began with "Whilst I think it’s a great idea, I feel you young people are pampered and not encouraged to do something with no return..."

I saw the smile on his face slowly disappear; though his eyes told me he was intrigued in what this woman had to say. However I never got to say it because the train rolled up to Lewisham and he jumped off the train like speedy Gonzales, not before saying "Fair enough, you’re entitled to your opinion". He wasn't crushed and I know I didn't ruin his day, but I felt the need to write this for two reasons. Firstly, I know I have a good point and secondly, if somehow Courtney stumbles across this I want him to know that I am not a Meany!

When people are encouraged to give with a return, I feel the element of expectation will always follow and giving is not about receiving. Helping because you can and want to, should be enough. The reward comes from making a difference. As I am saying this I know a lot of my thinking pattern comes from being a counsellor. I have 253 hours of counselling clients for free, not part of a community order or any other type of punishment. I do it because I can and I do not expect anything in return. All I hope for is that I have in someway, given them what they needed in a time of emotional difficulty. The power of doing and giving is heavily underrated in today's society which is a shame.

Courtney and 8,000 other young people have worked on 100 projects over the summer holidays and been rewarded. I acknowledge that this is a good scheme as it enables young people to meet new people, work and go to concerts that they probably would not have been able to afford. However it is the reward that is the motivator and therefore I cannot overlook the longer term message that this promotes. Companies are feeding into a Generation Now culture, where everyone expects something for something. Yes, there probably is a small percentage of individuals that enjoyed the experience and would volunteer again and for free, though something tells me the majority would only do it again if the same incentives were in place, which defeats the whole object of volunteering. Compassion is declining whilst expectation is rising; the notion of giving to get given is fuelling a brat pack selfish society.

Shop of the Week - dizzlePOP

The SQUEEZE -- fabric coffee cozy -- Mary Englebreit goodness
Introducing Gigi Thorsen, the creative mind behind dizzlePOP, the Etsy Twitter Team's Shop of the Week. Gigi makes coffee cozies in a wide assortment of fabrics from bold to subtle, from flowers to skulls. It's no wonder she finds inspiration from these wonderful fabrics she's collected. In just over three years, her Etsy shop has seen 870+ sales, so news of her quality and attention to detail has certainly spread. Gigi says "I love making items functional and lasting!"

Some of dizzlePOP's popularity stems from Gigi's great customer service and fast shipping. Not one to rest on her laurels, her goal this year has been to make sure she has enough inventory to be able to turn her orders around quickly, but that's not her motivating force. She says, "For me it's not the numbers but the joy of creating and sharing!"

Gigi feels that Twitter is the best tool that brings business to dizzlePOP. Her secret? "Have relationships with your followers and those you follow." It's not just about the marketing, but the relationships you build through the medium of Twitter than can cause someone to check out your shop and stumble upon that 'just right' purchase. However, she does have a secret Twitter pleasure: Gigi loves to "watch views after a tweet and...to watch the number rise!"

Coffee Cozy Skull and Crossbones Red Bandanas
Gigi is planning a holiday special starting sometime after Thanksgiving, but this week she's offering a shop of the week special!

What's in a name?

After three girls, Chef Jamie Oliver is the proud father to his first son called, wait for it...
Buddy Bear Maurice. I don't know what to say, though should I really be surprised? Having named his daughter's Poppy Honey, Daisey Boo and Petal Blossom, it's obvious that Paul, Anthony or Luke would't have had a look in. What is it with celebrities that they have to choose such random names for their children? Especially when the majority of them have “normal” names themselves. What is the thinking process behind this? Is this a new craze among the social elite? Is it an obsession for their offspring to be as famous as the single named, globally recognised individuals, such as Madonna and Cher? Or in a world with roughly 6,869,100,000 inhabitants (estimate from Wikipedia) are they just exercising their creative rights, sticking a finger up to conformism?

To be fair to Jamie and the missus, their children’s names are pretty bland compared to these...
  • Audio Science: Shannyn Sossamon
  • Kal-El Coppol: Nicholas Cage (Kal-El is Superman’s original birth name)
  • Sage Moonblood and Seargeoh: Sylvester Stallone and Sasha Czack
  • Satchel: Spike Lee and Tonya Lewis Lee
Squash these names together and it will form the new advert for Rowntree's Randoms.

My version:

“Hello my little Sergeoh, this new drink of Sage Moonblood tastes like Audio Science, though if I’m lucky, it could turn me into Kale-EL Coppol and then I would be more than a Satchel”.

The original:

When you have money you can call your child what you like, because either way they will be alright. However not all people with weird names were products of famous mummy’s and daddies. Take Tiger Woods for example, he came from humble beginnings and now is a multi-millionaire. Who would have thought that a silly sounding name in childhood and lets face it, the continuous displays of snarling teeth, roaring sounds accompanied by claw hand movements, that I suspect he encountered, would grow up to become a tiger on the green and well... a tiger in the bedroom?

His international success, in my eyes is even more special due to his unique name, which in this instance is a creative blessing as his name fits the field he is in. Tiger on the green sounds fab, but not so fab if Tiger ended up being an employee at the local bank. With a name like that would he have even been employed? I may sound shallow but I am being realistic, as judgements are made way before the interviewing process begins, whether consciously or unconsciously it starts with the name at top of the CV or application form.

So what is in a name? I believe language is important, how you describe/label yourself gives an indication to who you are and what you think of yourself. Hopefully parents would have given some serious thought into the name that extends beyond adding a few Q’s, W’s and apostrophes in odd places, which Americans seem to love, evidenced in names such as Shanqueia and La’Quanda.

Take Erykah Badu’s children for example, Seven Sirius, Puma Sabti and Mars Merkaba, they are evidently unique names that contain an element of coolness and obvious meaning, though not known to me. Knowing that you are the first and only person with a name like that must feel amazing. I say this because on Facebook alone there are 449 Lisa Bent’s which I am quite upset about, I’m sure Freud would have something to say about this but anyway... the point I am trying to make is, does an unusual name give you an advantage in the confidence stakes? or does a parent’s creative inventiveness serve as an embarrassment for their child who may feel pressurised to live up to their name or defend it? Who knows? Perhaps I should ask Buddy Bear on his 21st Birthday!

On the flipside, I am forced to remember the many grown men who are called Devante, as a result of their mother’s fascination with 90’s American Boy group Jodeci. The two that I know, have chosen to use their more classic middle names instead. An unusual name can be fabulous only if it remains unique. I am no expert but I predict that this planet now contains quite a few Brooklyn’s and Beyonce’s which for me loses the essence of what was once unique.

Either way I guess it would seem that being unique can be a good thing but it is good to remember that children grow up. A name may sound cute at 5 years old but will it have the same tone at 19 years old and beyond? Parents may want their children to stick out, though in the early years a child’s whole being seems to be based around fitting in. So should parents be more considerate? Whilst there will never be a right or wrong answer I am contemplating that perhaps a celebrity doesn’t need to be considerate because their children will already have a fighting chance in life. Whereas the less well of need a fighting chance and it could be begin with a less creative name.

Shakespeare said “A rose by any other name would smell as sweet”. Meaning it is not the name that matters, but what something is. I agree, though the reality is children can be cruel and the world is not equal when it comes to judgements.

What is the Issue?

As I sat in Starbucks watching my Saturday go by, I paid more attention than usual to The Big Issue seller. "Big issue! Big Issue?" He called as he tried to catch the attention of people coming from all directions in the narrow cobbled street of Embankment.In the 15 minutes I watched him, all I saw was the consistent shaking of heads, avoidance of eye contact and quite impressive swerving manoeuvres. I laughed at the ridiculousness of it all before realising I do the same thing. My smile retracted and I turned my attention to the seller who regardless of the outcome, which was the same, was unfazed in manner.

The longer I sat drinking my over priced coffee (I blame Sex and the City, by the way) I began to wonder why I, like so many others reacted in this way, even though I know The Big Issue is for a good cause.

We all grab The Evening Standard every day to get the latest news I assume, because it is free. Many get The Sun because it’s cheap and cheerful at 20p. Though at £1.70 why is The Big Issue seemingly such a hard sell? Whilst everyone likes a bargain and even more so in times of recession, I do not feel money is a factor. OK!, Marie-Claire and Vogue for example fly of the shelves without fail consistently, even though they are quite pricey and filled with at last 10 pages of glossy pictures before you get to read some words. As consumers people buy the things they want, things that make them feel better and things that they feel they can relate too. Perhaps the latter could contribute as a realistic reason? I don't know. I soon realise that I can search for answers until the cows come home, but the best person to ask would evidently be the man on the other side of the window.

I introduced myself to Michael before explaining that I had been watching him from Starbucks and wanted to know more. My first naive question was “Is it always like this? “Yes” he replied in regards to the consistent flow of people walking away empty handed. I asked how it works and he kindly explained, “I am homeless and this is how I make my money legally”. Every seller buys each magazine for 85p and sells it at the fixed price of £1.70, whatever money they make they keep, Michael usually buys 10 copies. I asked how long it would take to sell them, to which he explained “There is no set rule, every day is tough. I could ask between 5,000 and 8,000 people before one person buys it", I realise my mouth is hanging open and quickly close it.

Michael is homeless and chooses to sell the big issue over begging to make his money. However something tells me that as a beggar he would earn a whole lot more. I admire his persistence and want to help himself. I bought the magazine for the first time, which at the age of 31 is pretty bad, but I soon let go off this hang up, after all better late then never right?

The Big Issue is a well written magazine that contains an air that is lacking in the majority of magazines, which I can only describe as down to earth, real and honest. Street Lights is my favourite section as it contains articles and poems from people who live on the streets. Their experiences, vision and voice is a breath of fresh air from the superficial world of celebrities and consumerism. Love and Loss, a poem by Steve Gould was simple, beautiful and identifiable.

I also enjoyed Letter to My Younger Voice, a mini interview with a different celebrity each week, revealing a less glitz and glamour side, as they express what they would have done then, with the hindsight and knowledge they have now.

Having read the magazine I arrive at a potential answer to my initial enquiry. A possible reason as to why people do not buy The Big Issue as readily as other magazines, could be because the sellers are a reality of what could happen to us all. Hard to face, we avoid it and choose to pretend that it could not affect us, therefore we look away rather than embrace and support. It is fear based and ego led. Though another contributing reason wrapped up in this could be what I will call “Guilt” syndrome. When I hear “Big Issue” and I make eye contact, I have always said “sorry” before rushing by, though I don’t know what I am sorry for.

Michael and I’m sure the many other Big Issue sellers do not want to be pitied, but to be understood, supported and respected like the rest of us, they do a job and are also trying to make a living.

Regardless of what could be endless explanations for people’s behaviour, next time you see a Big Issue seller think twice before passing by. Your £1.70 is “A hand up not a hand out".

HARVEST FESTIVAL!! - Photo & Cranberry Stuffed Acorn Squash

Photo and Recipe submitted by:
Maxine Forward
Whimsy Fish Arts (http://www.etsy.com/shop/whimsyfish)

"This was taken at Applecrest Farm in Hampton Falls, NH last October. I have always loved the Ghosties (white pumpkins), as they are not very common around here. Nothing says Autumn like a pile of pumpkins!"

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is very yummy, easy to make and uses great Autumn produce. Makes you hungry for Thanksgiving!
Cranberry Stuffed Acorn Squash
2 Servings
1 medium Acorn Squash
2 tbs. Slivered Almonds
2 Sweet Italian Chicken Sausages (6 oz. total)
¼ cup chopped Celery
¼ cup Water
3 oz. dry Cornbread Stuffing
¼ cup sweetened Dried Cranberries
1. Cut the squash in half from top to bottom. Scoop out seeds and discard. Cut a sliver from the bottom of each half so that they will sit upright. Place the halves, cut side up, on a baking sheet and roast in a 375° oven for 1 hour or until the flesh is soft. When cool enough to handle, scoop out the flesh leaving a ¼ inch thick shell. Put squash pulp in a bowl and set aside. Save the shells for stuffing.
2. Place the almonds in a skillet and toast for 2 to 3 minutes until lightly browned. Set aside.
3. Remove casings from the sausage and discard. Place sausage and celery in a non-stick skillet. Cook over medium-high heat until sausage is crumbled and no longer pink. Add water and bring to a boil. Remove from heat and gently stir in stuffing mix.
4. Mix stuffing with squash, almonds and cranberries. Cover and let stand 5 minutes.
5. Fill the 2 squash shells with stuffing and place on a baking dish sprayed with non-stick spray. Bake in a 350° oven for 30 minutes or until golden brown.
Curtis & Lydia Kinsey of FaerytaleWing's Art sent me this recipe to share with all of you. Here is what they said about it:
Sweet Potato Casserole
(or Sweet Potato Bake)
1/3 cup butter, melted
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon cloves
1/4 cup heavy cream (or half and half, or whole milk) (don't add if lactose intolerant!)
Topping:
1 cup brown sugar
1/3 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup pecans (or walnuts, but pecans are better) chopped
Mix together with fork; sprinkle over top of casserole.
Directions
Mix all ingredients together except for cream. Beat with an electric mixer until smooth.
Add cream;mix well.
Pour into greased casserole dish (preferably a 9"x9") and add topping.
Shop of the Week - jusshar
plus size crocheted cardigan turquoise 54 inches
The Etsy Twitter Team shop of the week is jusshar, featuring the sewn, knit, and crocheted accessories created by Beth Newbern-Hallam. Beth just doesn't run down to the store to buy material for every project. She loves to recyle yarns and fabrics. As she puts it, "I'm really dedicated to using what I have, and repurposing materials into something new." She does buy new materials for use in custom projects, unless the customer is like-minded and requests the repurposed materials!
As for ideas, Beth doesn't just get inspired; she is driven! "I just have an internal need to create. I knit and/or crochet every single day. I can't imagine NOT creating." Another thing Beth loves about her work is its mobility. She'll take it along on trips, car rides...even to her kids' school events! And if she's not getting the result she wants? "I can just unravel it and start over."
On the business front, Beth is planning to revamp her blog and website. She also plans to change the direction of her work from trying to hit trends to creating the items that come from her own imagination. This will be a challenge as she is a full time student in graphics and web design and planning a move to North Carolina where she plans to continue her college education. She wont' be alone though, as her youngest son will be attending the same college!
As for Twitter, Beth does tweet, but considers herself a "dabbler". As a business tool, she approaches social media carefully as she is concerned about being spammy. "That's such a turn off for me personally." Bringing business to her shop has been a struggle, although she has concluded that her sales are cyclical, with increased activity over the holidays. With her busy college schedule and planned relocation, Beth is planning to put her Etsy shop on an indefinate break on November 30th. "I'd like to sell out my Etsy shop(s) by then."
