Shop Of The Week: Cape Cod Jewels and Things

Cape Cod Jewels and Things overflows with shiny, glittery, happy creations.

Vintage and new jewels wink back at you from rings, funky puzzle piece earrings, spooky Halloweeen-ready amber chandelier pendants and more. Owner Linda Stranger embraces both her inner magpie, and her sense of fun in her one-of-a kind designs.

"My best inspiration comes when I sit at my work desk and play with my beads and wire and findings... I love it when a piece of jewelry just seems to make itself while I'm playing!"

A perfectionist, Linda takes great care over each piece she creates,
and admits that some pieces never make it to the shop. "It takes me a long time to pick out components and assemble my jewelry. I want everything to be just perfect, and sometimes I have to just let something be, 'cause I'm never going to be happy with it. You should see all the stuff I DON'T list. ;)."
In addition to her jewelry, Linda recently debuted a line of adorable handcrafted paper products in her shop and loves giving customers a little something extra with each order. Jewelry purchases come in a box ready for gifting, and she strives to be as "green" as possible by reusing packaging.

As a member of the Etsy Twitter Team as well as Unique Women in Business, Linda shares new creations on Twitter, as well as satisfying her window shopping urge following the links of others.

"I just tweet my stuff, re-tweet or reply to interesting tweets... I have fun with it. :) I've gotten to know more about my fellow etsytwitter'ers, and I think they're getting to know more about me... and I LOVE to follow their links and check out their newest creations and finds. I'm a professional window shopper and twitter has been a great outlet for that!"

Shop of The Week: Threepeats

The best thing about the fun and eclectic jewelry at Threepeats is that you can wear it AND feel good about doing something for the planet at the same time! Everything from recycled vintage beads, ribbons and lace to recycled tshirt yarn and felted wool beads find their way into truly unique designs that are easy to wear, comfortable, and one of a kind.
Suzanne, the creative brain behind the Etsy store, finds her muse in "the vintage materials I work with, the places I have been and by my students who have an uncanny, instinctive sense of style." Her necklaces and earrings all have a mod, bohemian vibe and a simplicity that makes them intriguing as well as versatile, great for gifts for yourself or a friend.
While she still considers herself a Twitter novice, Suzanne has found it a great way to connect with the handmade community. "I have learned that the equivalent of being a good listener (which on twitter means being a good reader) is appreciated. I try to respond as if someone had just said to me what they tweeted and not censor my response." She also starts tweeting each day with a quote, "something clever or funny or motivational," as a way of sharing a little of herself with her followers.
Suzanne ships internationally and can do custom necklaces for those who want to put their own stamp on Threepeats design.
Says Suzanne of her creations, ""My favorite thing about my craft is the pleasure it gives me; first designing the piece, then putting it together and the realization that I have taken broken, unused things and turned them into something people want to wear and admire."

Time CRUNCH: Easy Tips for Making Your Time Work

It's the one thing everyone I know wishes they had more of: Time. If you could buy it on Etsy, it'd be the hottest product listed, especially as the holidays approach.

But despite modern attempts to get a handle on our time with everything from computers to iphones, we often find ourselves with to-do lists that never seem to end. Add owning your own business to the mix of family and daily demands and its a wonder that we get as many things done as we do!

Marcia Ramsland comes to our rescue with Simplify Your Time: Stop Running and Start Living, a book that aims to help you organize and prioritize your life without going crazy in the process. She takes us back to basics with some useful sanity savers:

  • Use a Calendar - this simple tool can help you keep everything together at a glance, and that can be invaluable. Hanging calendar, computer, planner, blackberry, i phone- WHERE you keep it isn't important. Keep it in a way that makes it easy for you to refer to and USE.
  • Use a List- your short term memory can only handle 7 things before it begins throwing out tasks. A list helps you take control of your day and to-dos before they take control of you, and also helps you see where the pitfalls are. Are you overscheduled? Do you need supplies or to prepare for a meeting?
  • Plan Ahead- At night, take a break to think about tomorrow and what you will need- or want-to do the next morning. At noon, plan your afternoon. Assess what works and what doesn't, and adjust your list to fit what works best for you.
  • Make 1 day each week Free Choice- one day or night a week, write "free choice" on your calendar and STICK TO IT. Do something you WANT to do, whether it's spending time with your family, shutting the computer off, taking a walk in the woods, or just relaxing. This recharges your inner batteries and gives your brain a quick vacation. The extra energy you have after doing this will help you accomplish more in the long run, as well as handle stress more effectively.
  • Prioritize- everyone from our parents to our teachers and bosses remind us to prioritize. Decide the three most crucial tasks for that day, and do them FIRST. Not only does this give you a sense of accomplishment, it also insures that you won't be putting out fires later on something urgent that just "didn't get done" while you were working on other, less important things.
  • Do 1 action per day that will help keep your life simple and in order
  • Don't Be Afraid of a Routine - I freely admit that routines make me want to run screaming for the door, but having a few routines is actually as good for adults as it is for kids, and takes some of the stress out of your everyday life. Grocery shopping, bill paying, gym time, errand running, etc are all good tasks that can be scheduled for the same time each week, taking out the guesswork.
  • Write in Pencil - this is good to remember, because life happens to all of us, and the best laid plans can be scrapped by emergencies, suddenly urgent tasks, and a host of other unexpected events. Writing your calendar in pencil makes it easier to be flexible.
  • Control your Email- Schedule times to check your inbox ( 7am, noon, 4pm, for example). Invoke the 2 minute rule. If it can be handled in under 2 minutes, do it right then. Your inbox should be kept empty, so delete it, file it, or answer it. Longer responses can be addressed the next time you open your email.

Focusing on how we use ( or don't use ) our time can help us pinpoint stress and eliminate it long before crunch time hits, and that is the best sanity-saver of all. Well, besides an emergency stash of chocolate, of course!

Homecoming Festivities: Day 2!

The Homecoming Festivities continue today with an apple cider that packs some serious tailgate punch, a chili that will keep your guests lingering in the parking lot, and more!

Did you know that the original incarnation of football rivalry ( Univ of MO Tigers vs Univ of Kansas Jayhawks) took place on neutral sites until 1910? A new conference regulation requiring intercollegiate football games to take place on college campuses spurred the first "Homecoming" celebration in 1911, in part to renew interest in the rivalry, and ensure good attendance at the new location. Some 10,000 alumni returned to the campus to enjoy the festivities and watch the game (which ended in a 3 - 3 tie).

What's the most widely attended and heavily recognized event of the Homecoming Festivities, at most major colleges and universities?

You guessed it- the tailgate party. The tailgate party often lasts through the game, with some extra luxe tailgate tents having television feeds of the game for those without tickets! So what goes into a good tailgate party?

How about a spicy tailgate cider that will keep you warm ( with or without alcohol):

Indiana Joe's Tailgate Cider
  • 8-10 oz. spiced rum
  • 8 cups apple cider
  • Juice of 1-2 large oranges
  • Juice of one large lemon
  • 3 tbs. brown sugar
  • 4 whole cloves
  • 4 whole allspice berries
  • 3 - 5 cinnamon sticks

Preparation:
In a large pot add all the ingredients except for the spiced rum.
Simmer over low heat for 10 minutes or so.
Add rum and keep warm over a low heat or pour into an insulated container to keep warm.
To keep your cider potable to nondrinkers, do not add the spiced rum to the pot of cider. Add 2 oz. of rum per cup afterward. Garnish with orange slices.

Or, if food is what you need, you can't go wrong with this main-dish Southwestern style chili:

Bulldog Chili

1 pound lean ground beef
1 large onion chopped (about 1 cup)
2- 3 garlic cloves, chopped, or about 1/2 T chopped, prepared garlic
1 can of tomato sauce (8oz)
Coarse ground pepper
1 medium green bell pepper
2-3 Tablespoons chili powder
2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon sugar
1 ½ teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon red pepper sauce such as Tabasco
1 can Red Kidney Beans (drained)
1/2 can black beans, (drained)

#for those who like it hot, add a cup of hot salsa, hot sauce to taste, or jalapenos (be careful of the seeds as they are very hot!)

Preparation
Cook and stir hamburger, onion, green pepper and garlic in a 3-quart saucepan until the hamburger is light brown. Drain.
Stir in tomato sauce, chili powder, salt, sugar, Worcestershire sauce and pepper sauce.Heat to boiling; reduce heat. Cover and simmer for 1 hour.
Stir in beans. Heat to boiling; reduce heat. Simmer uncovered until hot (about 15 minutes). For thicker chili, simmer longer. For thinner chili, add a little water.
Garnish with chopped sweet onions, shredded cheddar, and corn chips.

The longer you can cook it, the better it gets, but will be ready to eat in about an hour.

Serves about 5 -6.

But there's more to Homecoming than food and football! Style plays a part too, whether you are headed to the game, cheering at the parade, or dancing your shoes off at the after-game festivities!

Have style, beauty AND warmth during the game when you wear neck warmers like these, from Tamdoll:

It's Homecoming!

Fall air as crisp as a freshly picked apple, blue skies, the boom blat of the band, and of course, legions of fans all awaiting the big game- what could be more fun in the fall than Homecoming?

For our friends in other parts of the world, a little information on Homecoming is probably in order!

Homecoming is an annual tradition in the United States. The University of Missouri at Columbia is often given the credit for establishing this tradition as far back as 1891, and it has evolved ever since.

People, towns, high schools and colleges come together, usually in late September or early October, to welcome back former residents and alumni. It is usually built around a central event, such as a banquet, and a game of American football or, occasionally basketball. Activities vary widely among schools, but usually consist of a football game played on the school's football field, activities and dances for students and alumni, and the coronation of a Homecoming Queen and King.

So come join us on the gridiron for a little tailgating party with drinks and great food, then dance the night away with specials and goodies designed to finish Homecoming in style.

For those who like their drinks with a little style, this Tailgate Mimosa is just the ticket:

Prep Time: 1 minute
Ingredients:·
  • 1 oz Orange Juice
  • 3 oz Champagne
  • 1 oz Chambord Liqueur
  • * If you are at a tailgate, just eyeball it!*
Preparation:
Pour Chambord and Orange Juice into a tall flute. Add Champange. Add a rasberry or strawberry for garnish and enjoy!!!

and for an awesome tailgate appetizer, this dip will have your guests preferring food to football ;)

GUINNESS AND CHEDDAR DIP
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 shallot, finely chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, chopped
  • 2 ounces Guinness stout
  • 6 ounces grated sharp Cheddar
  • 2 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature
  • 1/2 teaspoon caraway seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and pepper
  • 2 tablespoons chopped parsley
  • Assorted crackers and crudités
Preparation

In a small skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add shallot and sauté until soft, 3 minutes. Add garlic; cook for 2 minutes longer. Transfer to a food processor and let cool.Add Guinness, cheeses, caraway and paprika to food processor and blend until smooth. Season with salt and pepper. Place in a serving bowl, cover and chill for at least 4 hours. Sprinkle with parsley and serve with crackers and crudités.

Serves 8

Everyone can wrap up warmly for the game and still look good with these:

Happy Etsy-versary, Foxy G Knits!

Lois, from FoxyGKnits.etsy.com, was kind enough to share her stats for her first year on Etsy. She has accomplished a lot this year - more than mere numbers can convey. She has connected people and created community through her business. She is truly one of those kind souls many are lucky to know, myself included.
Today (9/29/09) is one year to the day that I signed up on Etsy, although I didn't list my first items until October 15th. Anniversaries cause me to be reflective; here is a wrap-up of my first 365 days in 371 words:

Sales: 59 sales (actually more because I bundled some orders for customer convenience)

Most unusual sale: In August, an art director who was filming a Georgia Lottery commercial featuring Atlanta Falcons contacted me by convo and Facebook 36 hours before I was leaving for California and asked me to call her as she wanted to purchase a red and black scarf. This might not have been unusual, but it was between 11:30 p.m. and midnight. She e-mailed me the next day to let me know which scarves she wanted to see and then came by my house at 7 p.m. that evening and purchased two. BTW, I did not let her in my house, but met her in front!

In August, I also had a shawl purchased by a playhouse costume shop.

Hearts: 300 shop hearts

Number of visitors to site: About 1,300 visitors last month and again this month

Made front page of Etsy on September 18th netting 294 visits and 19 shop hearts

The top five states from where my visitors come (GA, CA, NY, TX and FL) account for 49% of the visits.

I have been honored to be included in about 25 Treasuries, most put together by colleagues, a few by sellers I did not know.

I have been featured on various blogs with mentions on others. Written up most about Paying it Forward.

Started Foxy G.’s Den of i-KNIT-quity blog as part of marketing mix. Most viewers on one day: 119

Built Facebook biz page: 439 fans; established myself on Twitter. At #3 traffic source to my shop, Twitter appears to account for 13%. At #4 traffic source, Facebook accounts for 7.25% - for a combine total of 20%+.

Not being a numbers person, I have no idea how to put these facts and figures into context. I do know, however, that that most meaningful to me is my association with the EtsyTwitter Team and the wonderful, supportive people I am honored to call my friends.

- Lois
Thanks for sharing your numbers and your beautiful heart with us, Lois!! You are truly a valued member of this community and we all love you very much! We wish you much success as you head into year two!
