SHOP OF THE WEEK - Crochet Gal

This week the Etsy Twitter Team would like to showcase the Crochet Gal as the Shop of the Week.  Now, you will expect to see some super crocheted items in her shop, and you will, but she doesn't stop there.  She offers her special yarns for you to create some of your favorite items as well.  She also has something that is quite unique--wooden soap dishes.  Yes, wooden soap dishes that she hand cuts herself in a collaboration with her partner who uses the Etsy account UnclJohn.
Wooden Soap Deck/Dish
Aren't these just the greatest??  Think about stocking stuffers for the upcoming holidays.  They come in a three pack and you will need several.  Cute little gifts with a handmade bar of soap all wrapped up in cellophane with a pretty ribbon.

Her favorite artist is Jill Walterbach, aka The Wooden Wizard, www.thewoodenwizard.com
"Her work has always inspired me to push beyond my limits. I’m amazed at what Jill can do with a scroll saw. "

Her love of crocheting is evident in her work.  In her own words, "Currently, I am a crochet professional working in the industry. I love to work with any type of materials. If it can be stranded, it can be crocheted. Many of my items are of my own design, some of which have been featured in major publications. Most of my wearables are one of a kind pieces. I'm always looking for fresh, new ideas so if there is something that you would like me to make, please get in touch. I enjoy a challenge and as long as I have a picture to go by, I can usually make the item."
Crocheted Lace Shawl
Val has created many lovely items, the one pictured here is Alpaca and Silk in sapphire blue; doesn't it just scream soft and comfy??  Wrap up in one of these for a night on the town with that little black dress and you will turn heads.
She also carries a wide array of yarns and other threads so be sure to browse her shop.

She is a member of the Crochet Guild of America (CGOA).

The Big Conversations Event

After my stint at speed dating (see Catch Me Cupid review ), I have decided the next step is to attend...'The BIG CONVERSATIONS' with Paul Carrick Brunson. Have you seen his picture? Yep you can see I didn't need much convincing. Anyway he is married and of course I am ever the professional, so I am attending as I am interested in what he has to say on the topics of Love, Dating, Social Interaction, Sex, the value of Marriage (or lack of) and what Men and Women REALLY want. This event may shed some light on this million dollar question.

Paul Carrick Brunson is affectionately referred to as the real life Hitch, he, through his company Onedegreefrom.me provides a one to one tailor made service to his clients who primarily are ambitious, cultured, and professional men and women of colour who are money rich and time poor. His self-development program formulated by Brunson himself, combines his observations of the client with his knowledge and understanding of life-coaching, psychotherapy and counselling. It is this that sold the event to me. I love new insights into the dynamics of relationships and what effects they may have on individuals and others through the insight of theoretical approaches. I kid you not when I say I am excited.

Paul’s grown to become a highly influential and respected male voice in a largely female dominated industry. Outside of his personal clients, his 27,000+ active Twitter and Facebook followers are in constant dialogue with him. Never before has a relationship coach been able to penetrate and affect a 25 – 37 year old, male and female demographic to this extent.

This event is brought to you by Ivy Munro, a London based media company comprising of an online magazine covering Music, Culture and Entertainment, whose focus is to push new and relatively unknown individuals to the forefront extending beyond the virtual realm. This event is the first of its kind in the UK (due to its scale). If  you were already thinking of ways to capture Paul's expressions and bottle them in neat little bottles, think again, “Paul’s not here to fix our problems, but rather incite an impactful discussion and will us to re-evaluate our values which will hopefully lead us take action as individuals and cause a change within our immediate environment”. We are all individuals with unique experiences, reference points and so much more, as a result this event will resonate with us in different ways.

Involved in the discussion will be a diverse set of people who work in the media industry both in front and behind. On the panel will be Charlene White (ITV News Presenter) Angie Le Mar (Producer/Director/Actor/Comedian) O-T Fagbenle (Director/Musician Award Winning Actor) Nolan Weeks (Poet, Model Producer, Director), Simone Bresi-Ando (PR Expert & Founder of I’mPOSSIBLE) Tobi Okeowo (Lawyer and Motivational Speaker) Roger Ajogbe (Journalist and Social Commentator), Chrissa Amuah (Cultural Media Expert) Uche Chukwu (Journalist and Online Media Publisher) Lanre Iroche (Editor of Outflow and Relationship Journalist) and hosted by Reuben Christian (co-founder of http://www.individualism.co.uk/).

You have seen the topics for discussion which will be heated, insightful, informative and entertaining, so book your tickets now before they sell out. I will be reviewing this event so look out for the review.

THE BIG CONVERSATION (CONFERENCE DETAIL)

SOTW – Jaybird Designs

clip_image001

If you crochet, you are going to love this week’s Shop of the Week. Jennifer J. Cirka from Jaybird Designs, is a professional crochet designer who has been recognized in every major national and international crochet magazine, including Interweave Crochet, Crochet!, and Inside Crochet. She has had her Tulip Baby Set on the cover of the April 2010 edition of Crochet World Magazine and she also won the Flamie Award for the Best Children’s Design with this design! And if that doesn’t fix your craving for great crochet features, she also has a book published with Leisure Arts called “Top-sy Turvy”

She offers custom crochet items and unique and original crochet patterns for the DIYer in you.

Things you may not know about Jennifer: She trains Gracie Barra Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu and kickboxing. The most influential person in her craft is her grandmother. She learned the basics of crochet from her grandmother, Martha Hardway who was also an avid seamstress and quilter. She also believes she gets her creativity from her grandmother.

Jennifer loves the colors in Western Colorado and the Rocky Mountains and with the ski trends and winter sports community, she is inspired and gets a jump start on her hat creations.

If she could choose to live anywhere in the world besides where she currently lives, she would choose a place that had consistent 65-75 degree weather so she could always wear jeans, boots and sweaters. If she was stuck on a desert island, she would need her crochet hooks, yarn and her family.

When we asked her if she had a million dollars to give away, what would she do with it? She said, “That's a hard question! I'd break it up and send to The American Cancer Society in memory of my maternal Grandmother who taught me to crochet. I'd send some to The American Heart Association in memory of my father. And the Muscular Dystrophy Association because my husband has Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease and we'd love to find a cure! But there are so many other worthy causes I'd love to help too.”

Finally, her advice to Twitter users is to tweet often, but don’t get too personal.

    hehe Let's Go...

langsung aja ini cara mengetahui jumlah visitor
Pertama2 kamu buka tab baru. Ketik www.sitemeter.com

    Caranya:
    -Cari menu Manager
-Di menu Manager ada pilihan "meter style"
-Klik aja langsung, Nah disitu keluar dah contoh meter style yang bisa kamu pilih
    -Pilih yang kamu suka
    -Kemudian cari HTML CODE

    Semoga Bermanfaat Ya...

    Sambil Share Blog ini.  Ok???
Copy boleh2 aja, tapi mohon tetap cantumin sumbernya
    tunaspisang Tutorial

    Cara Menampilkan Posting Terbaru

    1. Login ke Blogger kemuduan pilih "Dasbor-->Rancangan"
    2. Klik pada "Page Element" trus pilih "Add a Gadget --> HTML/Javascript" (Letakan Gadget dimana aja kamu suka).
    3. Copy kode berikut ini dan paste di kotak dialog Gadget
    <script src="http://www.geocities.com/uddin_81/recent-post.js"></script>
    <script>var numposts = 10; var showpostdate = false; var showpostsummary = false; var numchars = 100; </script>
    <script src="http://namablogmu.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default?orderby=published&amp;alt=json-in-script&amp;callback=rp">
    </script>

    4. Ganti namablogmu dengan nama blog kamu.
    5. Angka "10" menunjukkan jumlah "Recent Post" yang ditampilkan, kamu bisa menggantinya
    6. Terakhir langsung Simpan Dah.

    Membuat Kata dan Kalimat Berkedip

    kode HTML nya simple banget

    <blink>(Kalimat mu disini)</blink>

    Contoh Nih Ya...:

"Boleh2 aja copy postingan ini, tp inget cantumin sumbernya ya, hehehe"

    html nya kayak gini
    <blink>
"Boleh2 aja copy postingan ini, tp inget cantumin sumbernya ya, hehehe"</blink>

maka hasilnya akan seperti ini :
"Boleh2 aja copy postingan ini, tp inget cantumin sumbernya ya, hehehe"

    Gampang Kan Shob???

    Sumber tunaspisang donk?

    Slave Earrings

Last week Vogue Italia posted an article revealing that the exciting new trend for this season is… "Slave Earrings”, yes you heard correct. Uproar commenced as once again ignorance and arrogance reared its ugly head. Adding further insult, Tuesday 23rd August was and is the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition. This date is significant as it was this day in 1791 that an uprising in Haiti took place, which eventually led to the end of the transatlantic slave trade. 12 million people were transported and well over 2 million died, this was and is one of the most inhumane “enterprises” in history. The 23rd of August each year is seen as a tribute to the slaves who fought so hard for their freedom.

Using the term "slave" to sell a product is not trendy, clever or chic, it is however highly offensive and insensitive.

Editor Franca Sozzani issued a statement to apologise and claimed that "slave" was a mis-translation from "Ethnic" she said
"We apologise for the inconvenience. It is a matter of really bad translation from Italian into English...The Italian word, which defines those kind of earrings, should instead be translated into 'ethnical style earrings'. Again, we are sorry about this mistake which we have just amended in the website”.

And so “slave' earrings have now become 'ethnic earrings'. 'Ethnic' is no better and although I didn't study Italian I know that her “lost in translation” excuse holds no weight at all.
Below are the English and Italian words, either way is it not clear what it is ?
    slave =schiavo
    ethnic =etnico

Also can someone please explain to me how earrings that are round in shape equate to “slave” or "ethnic"?
    Supermodel Iman said
"I didn't like it. Slave does not make it ethnic. Mind you, it’s not lost in translation–the word slave, we know what it is. They might as well have called them 'n***** earrings.' For somebody like Franca Sozzani, who did that whole black issue for Vogue, somebody should have said something".

I personally believe this is a sackable offence but something tells me she is not going anywhere. This is not right and it is definitely not okay and people need to be held accountable. Below the new name, the site says…

WE'VE DECIDED TO REMOVE THE ARTICLE FROM THE SITE TO PROVE OUR GOOD FAITH AND TO SHOW IT WASN'T OUR INTENTION TO INSULT ANYONE

So it wasn’t their intention to insult anyone. Really? So what was their intention? The attempt to glamorise an   atrocious event in history? Cause controversy to highlight and sell a product? No matter what avenue of understanding I try to take, it always leads to a dead end. The only thing to understand is that ignorance is not bliss though it is certainly rife.

I am personally tired of people with such influence having what seems to be a severe lack of cultural awareness and arrogance disguised as naivety. If these earrings are African in design or inspired by Africans, then what is wrong with using the word African? If this was really about acknowledging and celebrating the “decorative traditions of the women of colour” then celebrate it properly in the appropriate manner.

Give me history. Give me the roots. Show me the influences. I have posted a few examples below however  as I do not understand what they meant, I acknowledge the pictures below still may not capture the "essence" of what the editor of Vogue was trying to say. The women below are not slaves, they are African tribal women whose jewellery symbolises  various cultural meanings.
Africa, Kenya, A young from the Pokot tribe. Her married status is denoted by her large brass earrings and broad beaded collars and necklaces.
    © John Warburton-Lee / DanitaDelimont.com
Africa, Kenya, Kapenguria, Chepararia. Pokot woman's earrings, hairstyle and beaded ornaments
Women adorned with Gambian Gold, indicative of her wealth.
I typed in Slave earrings into Google and surprise, surprise the only images that came up were of Vogue Italia's interpretation. There is no such thing as Slave earrings. Type African hooped earrings and you will be presented with an array of designs .

Slavery may have been abolished but it still exists today. Therefore the word "slave" will have different associations with many people across the world. Whichever way you look at it there is no justification for the use of this word in selling a product at all.
