I'mPOSSIBLE: Youth Edition at The House of Commons

Hot on the heels of the March 8, international women’s day edition that took place at the revered Royal Festival Hall as part of Southbank’s annual Women of the World festival,I’mPOSSIBLE is back with a special youth edition as part of ‘Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day’ activities. The venue for this edition will be at The House of Commons in partnership with Black Women Mean Business’ (BWMB), founded by Diane Abbott MP in 1992 as a non-profit, non-aligned initiative. BWMB is concerned with supporting and celebrating black women professionals, black businesswomen and with black entrepreneurship generally, so in in line with I’mPOSSIBLE.

The youth edition, is made up of five female panellists who found success (and are still building on it) during their teens or early twenties. The audience for the event will be made up of young girls between 14-18 years from a selection of London schools and youth projects, whilst the panel consists of young women below the age of 30 who many found success in their teens or early twenties. The panellists for this edition consist of: Sheila Nortley – Filmmaker, Kingdom Entertainment Group, Celeste Houlker – editor, Live Magazine,Barbara Kasumu – Elevation Networks, Sheryl Nwosu – Barrister and Sarah Tetteh -journalist, Huffington Post and I am very happy and honoured to be the host.

I’mPOSSIBLE founder Simone Bresi-Ando is certainly making her mark in her bid to inspire Women of Colour she said…

“2013 is already shaping up to be a momentous year for I’mPOSSIBLE! The fact our events are being hosted in places like the Royal Festival Hall and now the House of Commons is indicative of the essential work the social enterprise is doing to empower women and young girls everywhere.”

“We are presenting role models that don’t always get the recognition they deserve but are leaving a trailblazing legacy for a new generation to stand on their shoulders and build higher. Having a youth edition of the I’mPOSSIBLE conversation is a long standing dream which I’m now seeing fulfilled. The next step is to make this a continuing occurrence which reaches as many young girls as possible.”

The Big Conversations Event

After my stint at speed dating (see Catch Me Cupid review ), I have decided the next step is to attend...'The BIG CONVERSATIONS' with Paul Carrick Brunson. Have you seen his picture? Yep you can see I didn't need much convincing. Anyway he is married and of course I am ever the professional, so I am attending as I am interested in what he has to say on the topics of Love, Dating, Social Interaction, Sex, the value of Marriage (or lack of) and what Men and Women REALLY want. This event may shed some light on this million dollar question.

Paul Carrick Brunson is affectionately referred to as the real life Hitch, he, through his company Onedegreefrom.me provides a one to one tailor made service to his clients who primarily are ambitious, cultured, and professional men and women of colour who are money rich and time poor. His self-development program formulated by Brunson himself, combines his observations of the client with his knowledge and understanding of life-coaching, psychotherapy and counselling. It is this that sold the event to me. I love new insights into the dynamics of relationships and what effects they may have on individuals and others through the insight of theoretical approaches. I kid you not when I say I am excited.

Paul’s grown to become a highly influential and respected male voice in a largely female dominated industry. Outside of his personal clients, his 27,000+ active Twitter and Facebook followers are in constant dialogue with him. Never before has a relationship coach been able to penetrate and affect a 25 – 37 year old, male and female demographic to this extent.

This event is brought to you by Ivy Munro, a London based media company comprising of an online magazine covering Music, Culture and Entertainment, whose focus is to push new and relatively unknown individuals to the forefront extending beyond the virtual realm. This event is the first of its kind in the

(due to its scale). If you were already thinking of ways to capture Paul's expressions and bottle them in neat little bottles, think again, “Paul’s not here to fix our problems, but rather incite an impactful discussion and will us to re-evaluate our values which will hopefully lead us take action as individuals and cause a change within our immediate environment”. Endless Possibilities

On the evening of Wednesday June 15 2011, I attended I’mPOSSIBLE. conversations, the first of a series of intimate events helping to educate and empower young women of colour in Britain. It was a truly beautiful, relaxed and empowering evening hosted by the very vivacious Tameka Empson, whose comedic timing, improvisation and ability to engage with and involve the audience was second to none. Her nature coupled with the décor at B.Hive further created a cozy environment that eradicated the often present “us” and “them” invisible line that is usually felt at speaking events.

Sharing their stories were Bonnie Greer OBE, Angie Le Mar, Charlene White, Angela Ferreira and Precious Williams who all expressed their journey’s with unreserved openness, humour sparkled with little gems of knowledge for us all in how to approach life, tap into our own ability and go beyond the limitations of who we think we are.

Everyone has a story because every individual embarks on a journey. There is validity and lessons to be learnt in all expressions. I’mPOSSIBLE is great as in a fast moving world of technology anything is accessible, but nothing can beat the experience of face to face interaction when sharing and exchanging knowledge. Simone Bresi-Ando, I’mPOSSIBLE. founder made this event possible through her mission to inspire us all in enabling us to believe in the possibilities of ourselves, she said...

"To see my idea blossom into a force for good which positively affects everyone in that room and beyond is really where the passion of I’mPOSSIBLE lies. We changed lives tonight by simply showing the audience that they are POSSIBLE because they have the ability, choice and drive to define success on their own terms, unapologetically.”

Event’s such as this, which centres on service to others is vital for everyone but especially women of colour. We have a voice; our voice is valid and needs to be heard in order to raise our visibility and influence.

I am a big fan of Bonnie Greer, so hearing her speak and meeting her was truly something. She has a presence that resonates with me in the same ways as Martin Luther King and Iyanla Vanzant. Every sentence is effortlessly expressed, eloquent and immensely powerful that manages to create a stir in my soul. She has it, I don’t know what that is, but she has it!

I walked away feeling honoured and motivated with a more embracing sense of my own ability and potential. The possibilities of what I can achieve is as wide as the universe though the belief starts within. I left with these thoughts and I will leave you with some words of wisdom from the panel.
