FOR BROKEN RAINBOWS

I have been a fan of Ntozake Shange's work for years, so when I heard her choreopoem, For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf was being made into a film, I was ecstatic though apprehensive upon hearing Tyler Perry was the writer, producer and director. Although I do not particularly like his films due to the stereotypical tone, lack of depth and predictable formulaic structures, I respect his ambition and drive. However Shange’s work is iconic. Get it right and you will be hailed, get it wrong and it could be career suicide and an insult to the original piece of work. Either way it was a risk…

The cast is lead by eight African-American women, seven of whom are based on the play's seven characters identified by colours, such as "Lady in Red", "Lady in Blue" and "Lady in Yellow" etc. Perry remains faithful to the poetic style and has successfully devised a storyline that visually brings to life the words. The themes of love, rape, abandonment, infidelity and abortion are explored in linear time that weave and connect the characters together.

Macy Gray (Rose) Loretta Devine (Juanita) and Anika Noni-Rose (Yasmine) put on stellar performances as did Thandie Newton. She was exceptional as a promiscuous drunk and I cannot imagine anyone including Mariah Carey, who was originally cast for this role but pulled out due to “medical reasons”(being pregnant), to play “Tangie” with such conviction. Through her storyline we see an insight into sexual abuse, the emotional, physical and psychological impact it can have and the strain on family dynamics and relationships.

“Alice”, her mum played by Whoopi Goldberg, uncomfortably shows the damage of keeping abuse secret, whilst also highlighting the potential mental health issues as a result of such trauma. She is a hoarder and clearly suffers from OCD. Although never explained, her behaviour may have a correlation to her abusive past, as we see her need to control and create what she feels is a safe environment, something she was unable to do as a child, due to the violation at the hands of her father.

“Kelly’s” story is brought to life through Kerry Washington, who brings to the forefront the emotional turmoil of not being able to have children. With no signs or symptoms we learn this harsh robbery was a result of an STD. The tone of blame laid firmly at the door of the promiscuous man, while the acknowledgement of self-care and personal responsibility gained barely a whisper. The message lay buried for the audience to think and uncover. Whilst we cannot control the actions of others, we can control ours by regularly visiting the sexual health clinic for check ups.

Kelly” also gives voice to the pressures social workers are faced with everyday. Her visit to “Crystal” reveals the complicated nature of her job and the fear that prevents her from doing her job. Played by Kimberley Elise, “Crystal” is a victim of domestic violence and her children are witnesses of it. What stops her leaving is compassion and understanding for her partner. He is a former war veteran who sufferers from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) which is common, though rarely spoken about within this context. Tragedy strikes and we follow “Crystal” through the unbearable grieving process.
The rise of HIV within the black community is raised and with it the dialogue for further discussion on promiscuity, being on the "downlow" and what constitutes as being Gay, through the story of “Jo” played by Janet Jackson. The lines are murky, the excuses unacceptable and the life threatening behaviour to self and others rife due to dishonesty and denial.

Although Jackson played the part well, I thought her character lacked depth and originality. As a director of a fashion magazine her character walked off the set of The Devil Wears Prada and into this film in the same 6 inch high heeled and rude manner. Whilst I acknowledge Perry could have chosen the same mannerisms to make a statement about the nature of the fashion industry being nothing to do with race and all about power and attitude, it didn’t work for me and seemed lazy.

… Yes this was a risk and one which I am glad Perry took. In this form the message, lessons and insights are able to reach those who perhaps would not have picked up the book. The film gives a voice to the silent black women who seem to carry not only their own baggage but the baggage of others too. Struggling with the hurt and “sucking it up and getting on with it”, seems to be the coping method for many. Healing is needed and cannot be done unless the hurt and pain is looked at and released.

The themes within however hold no exclusivity, any individual regardless of race, colour or creed can end up with a crushed spirit, shattered self-esteem and in a place of no hope. We all can be broken rainbows due to situations, circumstance and well, life. So while this film based on the original work is For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf, the themes within are universal and all races could benefit from watching.

With such strong themes the questions I am left with, centre around the lack of promotion and marketing in London. Where was the premiere? And with such a strong and high profile cast, where was the spokesperson or representative championing the film and further raising awareness to the issues raised within?

......................................................................................
For Broken Rainbows who have watched the film and identify with the themes and need to talk, I have listed some agencies that you may want to consider contacting.

Moany Moany Christmas

I hate snow, I hate being in the snow but guess what? It is winter and therefore the season for snow! So please can we all just get on with it as the moaning is getting beyond a joke. Daybreak for example has turned into a show that lacked content and formula, into a show that seems to be just about weather which is, lets face it is 2.5 hours of reporting the obvious.

As the days go by and the UK enters further into chaos the country is once again exposed to be useless. Our systems seem to be filled with people who analyse and talk, though rarely have successful outcomes. Yes the weather can be unpredictable however rather than hiring a scientific weather specialist to find out whether this will be a yearly occurrence, the government should be conversing with the head of transport in Canada, New York and Russia to gain tips and therefore solutions to the ongoing shambles. “Oh no we can’t have that. It’s far too obvious and we can’t let other countries think we don’t know what we are doing” is my assumed and perhaps psychic response from behind the opulent doors of The Houses of Parliament. Members of Parliament remind me of some of the contestants in The Apprentice. The majority are filled with people with a good background in education, excellent work history though lack common sense and ground level knowledge and awareness. Excellent in avoiding taking responsibility and Machiavellian in finger pointing.

Planes are grounded, people are stranded and yet many are complaining that the presents they have bought online will not arrive in time for Christmas. I’m sorry but am I alone in acknowledging how absurd and ungrateful it all sounds? Yes I understand that the weather and lack of preparation has caused a knock on affect in other areas, however many have roofs over their heads, heating and dare I say health. This coupled with the fact that Christmas has turned into a crazed consumerism fest, far removed from the core idea because someone at some point chose to focus on the fact that the three wise men bought gifts, which in today’s embellished story, is now wrapped in Vivienne Westwood wrapping paper designed to bring awareness about climate change… “Hmmm” is all I have to say about that!

Strip away the notion of what Christmas has become, to reveal that it is all about the things that money can’t buy. It is a time for reflecting, appreciating and being around loved ones and nothing to do with how much you spent, what you want and what you received. Although the idea of not opening presents on Christmas is a horrid travesty for most, there is a bigger picture within the seeming disappointment.

With VAT rising and further job loses, spending habits have to change. If so many rely on Christmas being about spending money to make us and others happy, then society this time of year, every year is going to be one big fat moany moany Christmas…Bah humbug to that!

X-(Rated) Factor is tip of the iceberg

This year’s X-factor pushed the boundaries of what is considered acceptable viewing for a family entertainment show. Throughout the weeks the backing dancers have continually inched further and further from tasteful to distasteful. The crescendo however took place this weekend at the semi- finals with performances from Rihanna and Christina Aguilera, who both left nothing to the imagination and brought soft porn to prime time viewing.

I have spoken to both my male and female friends about this and whilst the majority acknowledge that perhaps it was a bit much for a family entertainment show, discussion centred and remained on the visual gratification. For men, Rihanna revealed her goods in a confident suggestive manner that I’m sure created new fantasy scenerio’s in their minds, whilst women not only envied her body but also desired to have that level of confidence and effortless air of sexiness. However as a family show, the level of appropriateness for children seemed to have been overlooked.

“What’s my name?” Rihanna asked as she gyrated across the stage in her mini corset and hot pants, though let’s not embellish it with pretty names, she was in her bra and knickers. Within the catchy chorus she expressed “Hey boy I really wanna see if you can go downtown with a girl like me” “downtown” is a reference to oral sex. This coded word which has not yet been highlighted within the media, perhaps suggests adults were unaware of the sexual undertone or were aware, but presumed children wouldn’t be. Either way, sexual messages were oozing from all directions and it didn’t stop there, Christina Aguilera followed with a “Burlesque” performance from her new film of the same title. This term has done well to remove itself from the tacky label that most strip clubs carry, though this performance was nothing more than a voyeuristic lap dance show and one which was entirely unnecessary.

The media and music industry have become saturated within the notion that sex sells. Due to the influx of images and sexual suggestion the boundaries have faded away and we have become desensitized and somewhat split in regards to what is and isn’t considered acceptable. What used to shock no longer does, it is now the norm and therefore eyelids are rarely batted. The only reason this incident has been highlighted is because it is a family orientated show, had this been a music video or a performance at a music award show the level of appropriateness would not have been called into question, even though children and young adults watch it.

So what exactly are we shocked about? X-factor is a music show and therefore merely represents what we are already subjected to right? I understand that due to the target audience there needs to be boundaries, though it seems we are all in denial in regards to what children and young people are regularly exposed too. If X-factor is called into question then so should Hollyoaks and many other shows. These are starting points to bigger conversations regarding why the media chooses to work in the way it does.

Sexual images, content and suggestion are no longer out of reach on the top shelf of the local newsagents. Press the remote, tune into the radio, look online, it is blatantly there. Look back at artists such as Ciara, Beyonce, Britney and more recently Miley Cyrus for example, they all started out as cute, respectable and innocent and quickly turned into sex objects, tantalising teasers, with outfits associated with porn and lyrical content littered with sexual innuendos. Grooming comes to mind.

The outrageous attire of Lady Gaga has been met with shock but more so now with acceptability and celebration. Why? Because she is seen to be making an artistic statement. Lady Gaga pushed the boundaries of what was deemed unacceptable further than any other artist. Whilst I acknowledge Cher and Madonna came before her, Lady Gaga pushed further by stepping of the stage and into “reality” in the same attire. She lowered the bar or raised the bar, depending on how you choose to look at it and other artists have followed in an attempt to stay on the radar.

Is the “sex sells” marketing tool necessary or needed? Who does it benefit and what impact does it have? If talented singers feel the need to strip of to become noticed and to sell a product then what hope is there for the rest of the general public, young impressionable girls in particular? The message that these constant sexual images promote is that women are objects to be desired. This is what men want and this is what you need to do to please and be validated.

Show some leg, pout your lips, look desirable and your album/single will get to number one. If this is the mindset within the media commercial world, then what is stopping young girls and women using the same techniques to strive for what they want (whatever that may be)?

Emulation is clearly evident in clubs on a Friday and Saturday night. Young women are wearing clothes straight out of the centre pages of their favourite magazines. Whilst being fashionable has always been a trend, what constitutes as sexy and desirable has taken a different direction. The term less is more, has nothing to do with class, holding back, remaining slightly aloof, it now literally refers to wearing less clothes to reveal more of what you have. As a result the dating game has changed, men no longer need to guess or be intrigued. Everything is out on display alongside the sexually suggestive dance moves copied from their idols.

Although priceless, the value of sex and love has depreciated. Value and worth is now within exposure, attention and instant visual and physical gratification. The media is and will always be a powerful influential medium, as a result they need to be forced to look at their methods and governments need to be aware of potential correlations to help find meaning, understanding and solutions to the current drink, drugs, sex, teenage pregnancies and rising STD and HIV issues. Clear boundaries of what is and isn’t acceptable need to be in place to give structure and direction for the young and impressionable. So far 1,000 plus people have complained to Ofcom out of a potential 19 million viewers, does this suggest that people are no longer fazed by the level of sexual content before the watershed?

Parental guidance (PG) refers to content appropriate for family viewing with underlying adult themes. Parental Advisory however is now the label that should be attributed to the majority of visual and audible content.

Shop of the Week -- Jenco13

Curly handmade scarf-pink and black

Our Etsy Twitter Shop of the Week is none other than Jenco13, aka Jen Kuebrich. Jen works tirelessly as the Captain of the Etsy Twitter Team and maintains an Etsy shop stocked full of delightful crocheted goodies. I asked Jen about the most influential people in teaching her to crochet. "My Great Grandmother, great aunt, and my mom: My great grandmother introduced me to crocheting at a young age. Even though she was blind, she taught me how to hold a hook and start a project. I feel that I am always surrounded by her love when I'm crocheting. My Great Aunt also helped to teach me how to crochet. After my Great Grandmother passed on I ran to her with questions about crocheting. My mom inspired me at a young age to do the things I like. She, too, is an artist and taught me about colors."

Her products include cup cozies--great gifts for those who love coffee, tea or hot chocolate. Perfect for college students, teachers, bus drivers, stocking stuffers, secret Santa’s--anyone on the go! Jen's cup cozies can be used year 'round--they work equally well on that iced tea/coffee during the summer as on that welcome hot beverage on a day like today! Jen also does custom orders for the sports fan, just "Request Custom Item"! Rumor has it she also does a really hot chili pepper cozy! [Pun intended.]

Jen has expanded her shop offerings to include seasonal crocheted scarves that are as stylish as they are cozy. She loves custom orders and is happy to accommodate any recipient from a petite child to that hard-to-buy-for person! Soon to be added: hats and baby items! This expansion may have been brought on by her recent move from New York to Arizona!

Offering variety and uniqueness is important to Jen, "each item is handmade making it unique. I use my own patterns and I'm very particular to making sure they look perfect. Many of my patterns have come from just "trying a new idea in my head". I work hard to make sure every customer in my shop gets exactly what they want. If they see an item in my shop and want it slightly different I work my hardest to get it to their standards."

And, just for fun, I asked Jen: If you were stranded alone on a dessert island, what 5 things would you want with you? Why? Her response:

"1- my husband
2- my family

I love these people the most in my world-plus it's always nice to have someone around for good conversation.

3- food/water [Ed. note: Jen is always practical!]

4- my crocheting
5- a good book

I am not good with sitting still. I need to dream big and always keep crocheting. If I'm not on the computer I am normally crocheting or reading."
