HAIR RAISING ISSUE

     Solange Knowles Before and Now

I was inspired to write this blog after seeing and reading the comments regarding Solange’s decision to shave her hair. I personally do not think there is anything wrong with it, but the comments have been less than complimentary. For example US artist Bow Wow apparently made his thoughts clear on Twitter saying…
Man these chicks losing they mind, they all look like they going through something. These chicks look f*ckin retarded with this bald sh*t man. These chicks losing they mind!"

Isnt it a shame that going natural, back to roots, is considered as “going through something?” This has bugged me and so I want to look at this from the other spectrum of this hair debate, as I could argue that the need to stitch and glue hair to your head to swish it like it’s yours is someone “going through something.” It’s not viewed this way by the masses because we have been conditioned from an early age that long hair is more desirable, attractive and the misconception that it is easier to manage. Put your hands up if you had a Barbie doll when you were younger? Did you wish your hair was like Barbie’s? I did and I tried numerous times to create this look by putting pyjama bottoms on my head and flicking it about like it was my real hair. In frustration I ended up cutting the dolls hair short because I didn’t and couldn’t look like her, so although she was Caucasian, I made her look like me. Please note I was 8 years old.

We are subjected to a range of media images that depict and dictate to the masses what is beautiful, but whose ideals are we conforming too? Somewhere down a very long road we have lost not only our perception of what beautiful is but also a sense of self as we fit our unique features into European ideals. I have identified 4 types of weave that seem to be populating the streets of London...
  • The Mop - The weave sits on top a nest of natural hair
  • The Horse - The hair is so long it looks like a poor horse somewhere is missing a tail
  • The Train Track - The tracks of glued in weave are visible for all to see
  • The Helmet Head - It is obvious that the hair is a wig or a weave cap as it is either to dry or to shiny and looks like it has been plonked like a helmet onto the head.
Yes, people looks like this and see this as more desirable which baffles me. However there are also many people out there that make a weave look like it’s their natural hair, congratulations to you, but the question still remains, is there something more going on other than rocking the latest trend?

I am not here to preach. I have worn a weave twice, stitched and glued. My reason? I wanted to see what my hair would look like long as my hair has been short since I cut it when I was 17. It’s been a short cropped, Ella Fitzgerald inspired style since then. I am sure you too, at some point did it for the same reason of change. The majority of people I know, including myself, have relaxed hair which does not grow as fast as natural hair or as fast as our Caucasian counterparts, so I understand that weave provides a magic service. However, is there something else going on when a weave makes a permanent settlement on the top of your head? To such an extent that the health of your own hair is substituted for the appearance of the fake hair.

There will be I’m sure numerous answers. My intention is to provoke thought. We have been bombarded with these images so much that it has become the norm, so to truly understand the extremity of all this I am going to show you an opposite extreme on a different level.

Millions of Caucasian people every year risk gaining skin cancer due to sun worshipping. Their reason? They want to be browner/darker, have a glow. Many spend hundreds a year on fake tan products and tanning booths. In layman’s terms they are buying paint in bottles to change the colour of their skin. Doesn’t that sound absurd? If you think this is very different and in no way the same as what many are doing, I would have to disagree, as they are both image related and far removed from what they are born with.

Yes I hear you, relaxed hair is not natural, it is chemically processed and if not looked after it can damage, however personally I view this to a less extent than weave wearing, purely because I am straightening my own hair rather than adding to it.

Unlike India Irie who sang “I am not my hair” it is evident that for many their hair represents who they are and the majority speak through their weaves, which are getting longer and longer. So what constitutes as beautiful and attractive? The answer will be individual but then again am I naïve to assume this? Well I must be because a vast amount of people are following one type of look. Therefore there is a mark that has been set which consciously or unconsciously is being followed. I would love to explore this on a much deeper level that surpasses the changing fashion and hair trends to begin to look at image, identity and the power of media representations on a deeper level.

So has your opinion on Solange’s hair changed if you judged it negatively like Bow Wow? The Cassie half shaven look seems to be the new trend right now. How many will level it out by shaving the other side? Perhaps Solange is creating a new trend for 2010 which effectively will allow followers to embrace their natural locks and remember or redefine what constitutes as black and beautiful.

Opening Membership Tomorrow

Last month we opened for 25 spots on the Etsy Twitter Team. Our new members are great! Many of them have already jumped in with both feet and have made significant contributions to the team. Now it’s time to open again to new Etsy sellers who Twitter.

Starting tomorrow at 7:00 PM EST we will be accepting 25 new members. First come. First served.

Many factors contribute to why we are only accepting 25 new members. We want to grow the team in a controlled manner because there is a lot of information for new members to catch up on and learn. Having someone get lost in a big membership shuffle is not what I want for our "newbies". We take care of members really well here, and I want that to continue.

My plan is to open for 25 new members every so often until we reach a certain number that has yet to be decided. So if you are interested in joining I advise you to keep tabs on this blog. I will not be taking names for a waiting list.

Tomorrow at 7:00 pm EST I will post instructions for how to join. Hope to see you there!

Due to a very old clerical error and miscommunication, we had to bring back RipperArts.etsy.com as a member as well.

Welcome to these new members who already feel like old friends! I'm looking forward to meeting our newest members tomorrow!

"Go Green" Shopping Guide

Think about how many places or times today you heard something about Going Green? Was it at the office, the grocery store, your child or a friend who spoke of it? In my house we talk about recycling everyday and I try as hard as I can to clean and recycle everything I can.

With school starting right around the corner the art rooms are in need of supplies. What can you send in or call your local school to donate? Well, lets see… at breakfast you may eat eggs. That egg carton could be used in classrooms to help students learn how to sort items or make a wonderful art project. At lunchtime you may have had a yogurt. Did you know that the schools use these in many different places? In the classrooms they use it for water, paints, and glue so they don’t spill. Other schools have a local charity that may give the school 2 - 5 cents for each (cleaned) container they receive (check your local schools newsletters or websites). Then comes dinner… You’re in a rush and you take that Healthy Choice out of the freezer and pop it into the microwave. Then into the garbage afterward, right?? Wrong. Wash it set it aside and give it to a school!! They are used for science projects or painting. All of these plastics may have the number 7 on it, but we could make a difference in our daily world instead of allowing the schools to go out and buy unnecessary supplies. You can be supporting the arts as well! Don’t want to contact the school… not a problem! Contact a friend you know who does art!

One of the books I have in my house is all about recycling. I haven’t gotten a chance to read all of it yet, but there are some really good steps about becoming green in this book that the Etsy Twitter Team has already done. Check it out!

Paper

With the amount of paper that is wasted on a daily basis, it’s no wonder that we are losing our forest and fresh air bit by bit. ACageyBee.etsy.com makes these adorable cards with paintings of girls on them. The envelopes that come with her cards are 100% recycled material. What a great way to write to a friend about an amazing book you have been reading about! Pick a card that looks like you or your friend to send to him or her. It will show your friends how much you’re thinking of them!!

Or how about a handmade Christmas tree ornament for that very special person from SalonDArte.etsy.com –Hey, it’s never to early to start your holiday shopping and help the earth at the same time!

Want to start a journal or a sketchbook? What about a list of things to do? In Pretty Cheap’s shop I’m sure you will find her journals to be perfect along with the fact that they are upcycled!!

Love beautiful flowers and real pictures on your cards? Check out DeeJayPhotography.etsy.com. They use 100% recycled cards with 100% recycled envelopes.

Jewelry

I don’t know about you, but some of the best jewelry I ever have received was handmade by someone. Many of our team’s shops recycle something that we see every day such as milk caps or dominoes. You also see them taking antique pieces of jewelry and making their own creations or upcycling vintage plastic beads and chains.

Here are some of my favorite shops:

ThatsHeadley.etsy.com - recycles tins into fabulous jewelry
PunkyJane.etsy.com - metal clay silver jewelry that is recycled silver
WellspringCreations.etsy.com - all natural stone jewelry
PrettyWhimsical.etsy.com - recycled pendants
NovaScotiaBeachGlass.etsy.com - a day at the beach jewelry!
LindaB142.etsy.com - love the bottle cap earrings!!
InMyHeadStudios.etsy.com - upcycled domino and Scrabble tile pendants
FirebirdHouse.etsy.com - antique jewelry pieces made new again
EchodAmour.etsy.com - custom item jewelry with recycled metals
BeadsofGlass.etsy.com - uses metal clay that contains recycled silver (99.9% silver)

According to my book, it’s a great way to go for a vintage item such as necklaces, wedding rings, etc. instead of buying something new. Why? Because metal is not being melted down to make new items. What do you need to melt down metal? Fuel. Energy. These things are becoming precious in our world. Buying vintage really helps to save the world in the long run!

Home Decor

Decorating your home can be really hard these days. Too many choices if you ask me! Plus you want everyone to walk into your home and say, “Oooooh, that’s so nice! Where did you find that?” You can make your home one-of-a-kind by checking out these handmade goodies!

KimWhiteCreations.etsy.com – tic tack toe pillows
FirebirdHouse.etsy.com – recycled sweater felted pillows that hide your journals
GeekDetails.etsy.com – uses some upcycled materials in her work
CuriousMess.etsy.com – recycled embroidered olive oil bottles

Now go enjoy a “Go Green” party and show off your green items!!

Go Green Bags

Reuse your grocery bags!! When my great grandmother was around she used to take all of the plastic bags and twist, turn, and knot them until they became a door mat. Yes, a door mat! They lasted a lot longer than you would think and they cleaned her son’s boots off from the farm. (That’s what my grandmother tells me.) Grandma would be proud of me because even though I may not know how to make these amazing door mats, I use a recyclable bag every time I go to the grocery store, the mall, or even that big warehouse I love so much. Here are a few stores on our team that sell these bags!

PinsWithFury.etsy.com
JaybirdDesigns.etsy.com
HandmadeBySandi.etsy.com

Did you know you would also be helping animals not eat these plastics in the sea or fill our landfills? How about helping the super markets save money on plastic bags? Ask their front desk to see if they give a you discount for every reusable bag you use. It could range from 5 to 25 cents each!!

Back to School Must Haves

The last bit of shopping I want to share with you are back to school items… there will be hats, shawls, back packs, cup cozies, and sweaters that are needed for fall fashion. Jump start that fashion with some of our shops:

KnittingGuru.etsy.com - uses eco-friendly yarn
JusShar.etsy.com - shawls and the coolest skirts (with bags to match)
Jenco13.etsy.com - scarves and cup cozies
HuayruroPeru.etsy.com – eco-friendly jewelry
HerbanLifestyle.etsy.com - organic teas and bath items to help you unwind from that long day at school or work
GreenBubble.etsy.com - organic and natural bath items
AquarianBath.etsy.com - no chemical fragrants
AmieVoltaire.etsy.com – adorable eco-friendly back to school outfits for children

I hope you check out some of these amazing shops because becoming a “Go Green” person is easier than you think when you start shopping with the Etsy Twitter Team.

If you would like to know where to buy a certain Go Green item, please post your questions here and we will point you in the right direction!

Happy shopping!

- Jen

Go Green with Natural Fibers and Yarns

For artists and craftspeople, being green includes the practices and methods we use as well as our materials. I’m a knitter and crocheter, so my concern is with yarns. I use natural yarns and only infrequently will use a novelty yarn as a trim. My favorite yarn is Merino wool; it has all the softness and loft of cashmere, but the price is a bit lower, it’s a stronger yarn, and it doesn’t pill so readily. I also adore fine hand-dyed and handspun wools, alpaca for its warmth and softness, and high-quality cotton yarns.

Of course it’s a good idea to try to use recycled materials whenever possible, but it’s also important to use materials that don’t harm the planet in the first place. I would like to take this opportunity to say that I find acrylics to be actually an irresponsible choice. They are made from petro-chemicals which are, of course, what the gas you put in your car is.

With the worldwide shortage of petroleum and the ensuing international conflicts over it, I find it hard to justify using a product like that. Also, acrylics, like all plastics, remain in the environment forever, causing tremendous pollution and environmental problems. In addition, acrylics really aren’t warm, they make your skin feel clammy because they don’t wick moisture, and they’re highly flammable unless they’re treated with very toxic chemicals. If you hold a piece of wool over the kitchen sink and put a match to the end, the flame will quickly go out and a soft ash will form that easily disintegrates. On the other hand, if you do the same thing with a piece of acrylic yarn, the flame will last for a long time (until you blow it out) and a hard plastic bead will form.

For those people who fear that they can’t wear wool or that it’s itchy, please realize that high quality wool is very soft and almost never causes an allergic reaction. What people are sometimes allergic to is the lanolin found in natural wool and the easy solution to that is to simply wash the garment before wearing it. For those few people who truly are allergic to wool, there are many natural substitutes such as cotton or rayon which is the same thing as bamboo. There are also new yarns made from soybeans, corn, and even milk. These are all soft and hypoallergenic.

As a responsible knitter and crocheter, I urge people to avoid using or wearing synthetic fibers. Do it for your own comfort and also for the planet.

RESOURCES FOR ECO-FRIENDLY FIBERS

Here are some places online to buy natural fiber yarns. Some of these sites also sell synthetic fibers, so check the fine print before buying!

www.yarn.com - This is the Webs site where they have constantly changing beautiful knitting, crochet, and weaving yarns on sale as well as their own line of gorgeous yarns. I adore their Valley Yarns wool and alpaca. It's so luscious.

www.knitpicks.com - KnitPicks has beautiful yarns at reasonable prices.

www.elann.com - Elann is a Canadian yarn supplier of really lovely yarns at good prices. Their Peruvian wool is a favorite of mine and comes in wonderful colors.

www.smileysyarns.com - I love Smileys and often go to their Queens, NY store sales as well as their extravaganza held in Manhattan during November. In among the synthetics they sell are some outstanding buys on natural fiber yarns. Smileys prices are THE BEST -- often up to 90% off retail for beautiful wool, mohair and cotton yarns.

I would also recommend that people look into www.joann.com and www.herrschners.com. They sell lots of synthetics and what I would call junk yarns like Red Heart (ugh!). However, Herrschners makes their own wool worsted which is inexpensive and comes in lots of colors. Joann sells some good wools, too, such as Paton's Merino Worsted and Joann's own Sensations yarn called Kashmira. Finally, don't forget about Ebay. If you search for wool yarn or cotton yarn, for instance, you'll find lots of great buys. I buy most of the DMC perle cotton I use for crocheted jewelry there and have never been disappointed. Hint: it's a good idea to look up what a particular yarn retails for before bidding. I hope this list is helpful for people looking for alternatives to Walmart and ways to be ecologically responsible!

Everyday Green- Tips and Ideas For Living and Creating Green

The truth is that most of us would love to be “greener” on a daily basis if we knew exactly how to do it. The old “paper or plastic” question we used to get at the grocery store has become far more complicated and it can be difficult to know what choices are truly better for our planet. A good example of this is the actual answer to paper vs. plastic, which is NEITHER as both cost the planet in terms of resources, landfills, and energy use. A better choice is to buy or make reusable grocery or market totes, like these here.

But reusable market totes aren’t the only answer to a greener life. Below are some tips and suggestions that anyone can do on a daily basis that contribute to the well-being of our planet as well as ourselves. The best part about living greener is that one small step combines with the small steps of others to make a huge impact for the better.

USE IT UP, WEAR IT OUT, DO WITHOUT

This 1930s and 1940s saying was the equivalent of “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” and it was a wise mantra to live by. The more we consume (buy) the more of our natural resources are turned toward providing us with the things which we consume. Yet many of us find ourselves without the time or ability to stop buying the things we need on a daily basis. Fortunately, just changing what you buy, where you buy it, how often you buy it, or how often you use it can make a difference!

1. Buy REUSABLE - when you buy things like pens, paper, or other items that we think of as disposable, choose to buy those that can be refilled, are made of recycled materials, or can be used multiple times. Better yet, replace items like disposable napkins with fabric napkins you can make or buy yourself. They wash with the family laundry and can be made economically from salvaged fabric or remnants easily and quickly. If sewing is not your gift, you can find adorable ones here.

And while you are at it, ditch all the bottled water and buy a reusable water bottle (and a filter for your faucet like Brita or Pur if you’re worried about water quality). Single use bottled water bottles land in the trash heap at the rate of 845 a second!*

2. Think LOCAL – When buying food, changing the location of where you buy, and the type of item, can have a big impact. Look for locally grown vegetables and fruits at farmers’ markets in your area. These are generally smaller farms, grown without many of the pesticides and chemicals of food we buy in grocery stores, and have a much smaller ecological impact because we don’t have to use so much energy transporting, storing, and preserving the produce. It is also good for your community because it supports your local economy.

Etsy makes it easy to buy locally made handmade items through their Shop Local feature. Just type in your location and you can find local artists in your area.

3. Make a change in your HOME – The items in our homes such as cleaning supplies, laundry detergents, even light bulbs are a great place to begin changing your habits to create a greener life. There are many more choices on the market now for consumers looking for greener products. A good laundry detergent to try is Seventh Generation Laundry Detergents (I buy mine at Target) which are vegetable based, nontoxic, biodegradable, and work fantastically well.

There are also tried and true simple cleaning formulas you can make yourself from everyday items like vinegar and water, baking soda, lemons, even Hydrogen Peroxide, which works like bleach without the danger and also deodorizes.

Using cold water to wash your clothes saves 85% of the money and energy used to wash a load of clothes*. Use the sensor option on the dryer so it shuts itself off when the clothes are dry, or skip the dryer and hang clothes to dry on a rack or a line.

Change just the THREE most-often used light bulbs in your house to energy-saving compact fluorescent bulbs saves 300 pounds of carbon dioxide a year*. These bulbs also last much longer, saving you money.

Since 1/6th of all the energy produced in the US is used for air conditioning, just turning your thermostat up two degrees can make a difference! Using fans, opening windows for ventilation, as well as keeping ducts clean and filters replaced all help lessen the stress on the environment, as well as reducing costs. The same is true in winter, when lowering your thermostat just two degrees has a similar impact. If you made the adjustments both winter and summer, you would save 2000 pounds of carbon dioxide a year*.

4. Think about PERSONAL CARE – This is an area that has true potential for a horror movie. One in every 100 personal care items on the market contains known or probable carcinogens. The industrial chemicals that are part of the basic ingredients include pesticides, reproductive toxins, surfactants, degreasers, and endocrine disruptors. What’s more, with the exception of color additives, the FDA does not review or regulate personal care items, even for children, before they go to market. The importance of this piece of information becomes obvious as soon as you start counting up the number of products you use every morning while getting ready for work or your day.

To begin changing, CUT BACK on the products you use or how often you use them. As you USE UP products, switch to an organic or all natural soap, cleanser, shampoo, or toothpaste. Organic mineral makeup, which doesn’t have talcs and chemicals, is an awesome way to help your skin, your budget (mineral products last much longer and require you to use less) and the environment. Etsy is an amazing resource for finding all natural soaps, cleansers, shampoo, toothpaste, and make up.

5. COMMIT your closet to buying less and reusing more- shopping thrifts, vintage, swapping clothes that don’t fit with a friend, or simply having less clothes to begin with are also important ways to help the environment. When you do buy, avoiding trendy, one-season only clothes is a good idea, especially if you invest instead in quality clothes that will last. Look for organic cottons, wool, and sustainable fibers like hemp and bamboo, as well as recycled fibers that use less energy than creating virgin fibers. One of the best ideas? Repairing and taking care of the clothes you do have. Just doing that alone cuts down on landfill volume!

You can find some great deals on clothing on Etsy. You can buy new handmade or vintage clothing of all kinds!

These are just some of the tons of ideas out there for those looking to go green! Three very good books, which served as the sources for the facts included in this article are:

*Ready, Set, Green - Eight Weeks to Modern Eco-Living From the Experts at treehugger.com, by Graham Hill and Meaghan O’Neill.

Going Green, A Wise Consumer’s Guide to a Shrinking Planet by Sally Kneidel, PH.d and Sadie Kneidel

The Salvage Studio by Amy Duncan, Beth Evans-Ramos, and Lisa Hilderbrand

Online resources and jumping off spots for more information include www.treehugger.com and www.webecoist.com, both of which are jammed full of ideas for greener living!

Information is only useful if we use it, so here’s the challenge for all of us -

What one thing will we change today to help ourselves and our planet?

Chock Full of "Go Green" Prizes

I hope you enjoyed all the shops listed yesterday to kick off our Go Green with the Etsy Twitter Team event!

In conjunction with this event, as I told you yesterday, we are hosting a scavenger hunt. Hidden in 8 shops on the list from yesterday’s post is the graphic you see above. It’s hidden in one of their shop listings. Find them and email the URL to etsytwitterteam@gmail.com.

If you blog about this event or tweet it on Twitter, leave a comment on this post for extra entries into the contest - one per blog post and one per tweet. If you don’t post it in the comments here, I won’t know about it. So be sure to post each of your blogs and tweets about our event as comments here! Make sure to leave a link so I can verify it. No link equals no extra entry.

I will choose 5 winners at random for eco-friendly prizes at the end of the week. The contest ends at midnight July 27, 2009.

And now for the fine print: Etsy Twitter Team members and their immediate family are not allowed to enter. By entering this contest, you verify that you are over the age of 18. One entry per person per URL, per blog post, and per tweet. No purchase necessary to enter or win. Etsy.com is in no way affiliated with this blog or contest.

Go Green with the Etsy Twitter Team

It’s time for our eco-party!! The Etsy Twitter Team has rounded up our best and brightest eco-friendly handmade items and supplies all for your enjoyment. Step right up and see how you can support handmade and the environment at the same time. Win-win for all involved!!

Why is buying handmade and environmentally friendly an important thing to do? The two go hand in hand. Buying handmade items supports small local businesses that do not have a huge impact on the environment like major corporations do. The accumulative effects of mass production contribute to global warming and pollution. You have not used up gas to go to the store to buy a gift and that gift is handmade and one-of-a-kind. Buying handmade helps us to reconnect with actual people in ways we don’t when we buy at “big-box” stores. That connection fosters community and community fosters care and concern for the world around us. So help us support our artists and our Earth!

Many of these shops have created items just for this event. Most are offering great sales like 10% off or free shipping. Take a look through the list and check them out!

Along with this event we are hosting a scavenger hunt. Hidden in 8 shops on this list is the graphic you see above. It’s hidden in one of their shop listings. Find them and email the URL to etsytwitterteam@gmail.com. If you blog about this event or tweet it on Twitter leave a comment on this post for extra entries into the contest - one per blog post and one per tweet. I will choose 5 winners at random for eco-friendly prizes at the end of the week. Contest ends at midnight July 27th. Watch the blog tomorrow for photos of the prizes! They’re really neat!
