Etsy Twitter Team Shop of the Week: In My Head Studios

34-year-old artist Vickie Porter, owner of In My Head Studios, has a passion for paper. "I love everything about paper-the way it feels, the sounds it makes, the colors and textures. It has dimension, and I try to use that in my work."

A self-professed perfectionist with an eye for detail, Vickie's exquisitely crafted pendants create miniature spaces that call to mind old letters, or the box of special treasures you had as a child.

Says Vickie, " I have to make art like I have to breathe! I intentionally keep a messy desk so I can be inspired by the play of papers together. I have WAY more ideas for art than time to do it in!"

Using scrabble tiles and upcycled vintage dominos as the base for her pendants allows Vickie to "create something new from something old" and the addition of beads, dangles and charms give the beautiful pieces texture and movement.

An avid Twitterite, Vickie uses her three Twitter accounts not only to "connect and form relationships with people. I talk to them, post useful links, and funny stuff" but also to "share my creative process so people get to know my craft as well as me. I strive to have people think of my work when they think of me."

In addition to working fulltime as an artist in her home studio, Vickie is also leader of the 175-member Etsy Twitter Team. "Running the team is truly a joy and a blessing to be part of! The members have created such a close community-I'm really proud of that." Recently, she made the decision to help start up and run the Facebook Fans of Etsy Street Team (FFEST) with several other women. "They are all very talented and I am really excited about this new venture!"

In My Head Studios is happy to do custom pendants. "If you dream it, I can do it!" and ships jewelry all over the world. " I guarantee you will love wearing your pendant as much as I enjoyed creating it!"

Back To School: College Preparation Advice

We have a great Guest Blogger today! Amanda from BeadworkByAmanda.etsy.com wrote up an article about getting ready to go to a university! Enjoy!

Preparing for College: The Admissions Process

For students becoming seniors in high school, it can be very exciting and very stressful. Applying to college is no easy feat. There are many things to take into consideration. The first thing to consider is your major.

When I was a senior, I didn’t know what I wanted to do (and still don’t!). I had a knack for math, science, and art so I figured going into the sciences would work out for me even though I didn’t know specifically what I wanted to do with it. Many people are in this situation as a senior. For this exact reason, many colleges allow students to choose “undecided” or “exploratory” majors where you can experience college and get your basic requirements fulfilled without having to commit to a major. It also helps to talk to teachers about their fields. For example, I was interested in chemistry but I didn’t know what chemical engineering was. I set up a meeting with my chemistry teacher and he went over the differences between the two. It helped me figure out what I should do.

Many colleges also offer college exploration programs to juniors and seniors in high school. I participated in an overnight event, which included a full taste of college life. I was able to sleep in a dorm room, eat the food on campus, and take several “classes” where professors explained what their major is like. Even if your school of choice is far away, a local community college may offer the same type of program.

It also helps to figure out what you don’t like and work backwards. I knew I didn’t like English studies or history, so that automatically knocked out schools that had more of a liberal arts focus and narrowed my search to technical schools.

Another component that contributes to college jitters are the aptitude exams. I’m talking about the SAT and the ACT. The SAT quantifies your abilities in verbal, math, and writing skills. The ACT has more sections and evaluates your abilities in English, math, reading, science, and has an optional writing section. As everyone says, practice is the best way to prepare. I have never taken test preparation classes, but if you are nervous about the exams, a test prep class could be beneficial. Also, you are allowed to take the exams as many times as you like with the highest scores being reported to your college. You can also opt to take the PSAT, or preliminary SAT, which is an unofficial practice SAT that is no different than what the actual SAT would be like.

The next barricade is the application. The items that a college admissions office considers includes a transcript, college level courses (AP), extracurricular activities, work experience, essay(s), aptitude test scores, and a portfolio depending on your major. Many things go into the decision of a college, so don’t worry if you feel like you are lacking in one or several of these areas. I will never be an award winning author, so of course I felt like my essay and English test scores weren’t where I wanted them, but I had many other parts of my application that were strong. Work on writing your essay with an English teacher if you are struggling. Many schools now offer college essay writing as part of senior English classes to help students prepare.

I tend to procrastinate, but putting off filing your application is not the best idea. If you want to do early decision, do it NOW! You’ll have peace of mind knowing everything is squared away so that you can focus on finishing your last year of high school strongly. If you decide to submit at the regular deadline, it may help to make a calendar of due dates for yourself to make sure no important deadlines are missed.

It probably wasn’t the best idea on my part, but I only applied to 2 colleges when I was a senior. You may want to apply to about 4 with 1-2 being safety schools, one being your school of choice, and one that you may not feel confident about getting into. When you do actually apply, many schools now offer online applications, which are much easier. Some states even have a generic application that allows you to apply to multiple schools at once (I know New York does). Be aware that some schools will charge an application fee.

Once you’ve been accepted, you’ll want to look into getting scholarships. There are many websites that offer links to organizations that will offer scholarships. While they may seem like a great idea, my experience has been less than superb. They tend to have scholarships that are available nationwide, which makes your chances of winning one much smaller. It is best to focus on merit based, alumni, and honors scholarships from your college, scholarships being offered by your high school, and scholarships funded by local organizations. Apply to scholarships that are applicable to your studies and are not out of reach. Otherwise, you’ll be spending days writing essays with only a slim chance at the money.

Shop of the Week: Nikky Lee Designs

Nicole Husnik, of NikkyLeeDesigns.etsy.com, creates stunning handmade jewelry and very professional photographs. I like the juxtaposition of her work styles. The two seem to complement each other nicely in terms of design, color, and composition.

She says about her two styles, “They're both a passion that I don't think I could live without. Every jewelry piece and photo I take is made with beauty and pride in mind.”

What inspires Nicole to create? “Mostly nature and its ability to be beautiful with such little effort.” Her work seems to require little effort, too, and that is a hallmark of excellent design and craftsmanship. She chooses many different styles of beads and stones to work with. Some of her work is funky and some of it is more traditional beadwork.

Her favorite thing about her craft: “The pure exhilaration when a piece is finished, or a photo turns out, just as I hoped... amazing feeling of satisfaction!”

What are her Twitter tricks of the trade? “Lots of personal tweets, cross promo tweets with personal promo scattered about. Share the love and it will be returned!” Nicole tweets a lot for the team and is always at the ready to retweet a sale, special, or just good news from other Etsy Twitter Team members.

Special for this week: Free earrings of her choice with any jewelry purchase $15 or more. Enter code "Feature Shop" in comments at checkout.

Etsy Twitter Team Pays It Forward

In additon to having a wealth of talent and a whole lot of camaraderie, members of the Etsy Twitter Team have very big hearts and pay it forward to favorite organizations and causes as varied as the 175 members of this international team:

For the entire month of July, 10% of proceeds from PurpleLemonDesigns's custom rubber stamps and printable stationary were donated to The Parker Reese Foundation to help in the fight against congenital diaphragmatic hernia.

That'sHeadley designed the Hope For Whirled Peas Collection, a limited edition series of jewelry pieces, specifically to honor veterans. A portion of each sale of these pieces is donated to the Fisher House Foundation. Her hometown of San Antonio has become the nation's center for medical treatment for amputees and has seven Fisher Houses in operation to support these families.

Betty Refour's artwork benefits The Komen Foundation, The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and the The International Myeloma Foundation. Her sister, who is also an artist, donates a portion of the proceeds from the items she creates to The Autism Society of America. 25% from the sale of the original abstract painting below, available at http://brefour.etsy.com/ , will go to support blood cancer initiatives in honor of her mother who lost her battle with myeloma.

Jenco13 donates 10% of the money earned in her shop to creating care packages for soldiers overseas and their units.

FoxyGKnits developed a scarf donation promotion to build her Facebook business page. Every new fan between July 15 and August 15 equaled a hand knit child's scarf for a local homeless shelter. Several Etsy Team North Georgia colleagues generously offered to help knit the more than 200 scarves! FoxyGKnits also offers Pay It Forward (PIF) items, as does Scrap With Style and StarBabyOnline.

Special thanks to Lois, owner of FoxyGKnits, for this article!

Etsy OWLS Trunk Show!!

The Etsy Twitter Team is teaming up once again to cross promote another Etsy Street Team! This time it is with the Etsy Off The Wall Ladies (OWLS) whose focus is, well, everything! This street team is for wild and crazy Etsyians who don't always walk the straight and narrow! Fun! Fun! I thought this would be fitting because we use the blue tweety Twitter bird a lot and OWLS are birds, too. Hoot hoot! Ok, I probably didn’t have to explain that. Just sayin’.

I digress!

The Scoop: They are having a big Etsy-style Trunk Show on Wednesday, August 19th from 7:00 to 8:30 pm EST in the Etsy Virtual Labs (room TBA). Lots of great items will be featured and tons of free stuff and swag will be awarded! Don’t want to miss the swag, do you?

What's a trunk show? In this case, a trunk show is an online craft show, with sellers showcasing a variety of items. Participating sellers will be offering special discounts in their shops, and the team will also be giving away a variety of "door" prizes throughout the show.

It's never too early to get started on holiday shopping or buy yourself a little something special either. Avoid the retail madness and support the handmade movement.

So go set that calendar alarm on your iPhone, put a Post-it next to your monitor, write it on your hand, or yell it from the rooftops. You. Do. Not. Want. To. Miss. It.

Shop of the Week: Firebirdhouse Designs

Kristen Evans, the owner of Firebirdhouse Designs, loves creating unique jewelry designs and textiles from vintage and new components, as well as recycled/repurposed vintage pieces and fabrics.

Originally a fine artist, Kristen says " I love turning beautiful things with history into useable and wearable art and that really began to be the core of my inspiration. I like the challenges that come with recycling and reusing in new ways."

Original patinas, embroidered and hand needlefelted details, and high quality components are some of the things which set Firebirdhouse pieces apart from the crowd.

Her colorful shop is an everchanging display of pieces that "hold onto the charm of vintage while still having a modern or quirky edge."
The shop offers free shipping to the US and Canada and ships worldwide, as well as now offering a wholesale catalog.

An avid user of Twitter under the name @Firebirdhouse as well as co-leader of the EtsyTwitter Team, she says "I love the people I meet on twitter, and I try to talk, comment, and share just like I would if they were hanging out with me in my studio. I try to always be genuine and be myself. A lot of my sales come from Twitter but I don't ever make that my goal."

Firebirdhouse Designs is offering 25% off on purchases over $25 from August 17 - August 23rd. Use Code SOTW in notes to seller and your refund will be issued via Paypal. Excludes Joyce Richardson Benefit items

Sneak Attack For Joyce

One of our own teammates, Joyce Richards of BeadsofGlass.etsy.com, has been diagnosed with brain and lung cancer. In order to help with her expenses like home health care, we have organized a "Sneak Attack" on her shop... and our hopes are to have her bought out completely by week's end.

She makes lovely handmade glass beads and jewelry. If you see something you like, please buy it. And tell all your friends so we can help Joyce out as much as possible.

Sandi created a Treasury dedicated to Joyce. While I don't normally blog Treasuries that are not full of teammates, I thought blogging this one was more than appropriate.

Enjoy and happy shopping!

Shop of the Week: Safiya Beauty

Everything about Nailah Safiya Blades’ shop at SafiyaBeauty.etsy.com is sumptuous. She creates natural bath and body products that merge natural and eco-friendly ingredients with luxurious indulgence. You can moisturize, polish, make suds, lather, and soak with her products.

Her shop announcement says, “Safiya’s philosophy is to provide you with the finest, purest natural and organic products, but never at the risk of neglecting your need to feel beautiful and smell delicious. Our products contain only what is absolutely necessary to make the absolute best product for your body without sacrificing your desire to feel fantastic.” It makes me want to check out her shop for something that will make me feel soft and pretty. I’m sure I won’t be disappointed!!

Nailah wants you to know that she works “very hard to make sure that my products are made with the very best ingredients I can find. I think as a culture, we pay very close attention to what we put into our bodies but not so much what we put on them, which is just as important. Because of that, all of my products are made with natural ingredients and contain no parabens, phthalates, or harsh preservatives. I also strive to provide an environmentally friendly product and go to great lengths to ensure this.

“I’m an indulgent person and I think that shows through with my products. I really enjoy creating products that will transport my consumer to their own little private spa. I love using creamy butters and skin-loving vegetable oils because they create such opulent products. I’m also slightly inspired by food! All of my bath bombs are cookies or cupcakes – I have a major sweet tooth.”

You can even see the indulgence in her products through her photos. The way the butters peak up firmly, you can tell they have a lot of body to them and will be luxuriously creamy.

Her favorite thing about her craft is “how the finished product makes others feel. I love watching someone try my body butters for the first time and see their eyes light up as they rub it into their skin or as they smell the scents. That’s definitely my favorite part!”

About Twitter: “I love Twitter! I think my biggest piece of Twitter advice would be to make sure it’s not all about you. I try to ‘RT’ [retweet] others or share articles that others may find helpful. I also use Twitter to announce any specials on my shop or when I have new blog posts.”

Are you looking for the perfect gift or favor? Custom and wholesale orders are welcomed by Safiya Beauty! They offer private labeling for weddings, showers and parties.
