Shop of the Week: Ambient Lights

Becki Krska, of AmbientLights.etsy.com, creates several types of items for home fragrancing as well as bath and body items. She’s on a mission to make you and your home smell like heaven!

For home fragrancing she makes 100% Soy wax candles, 100% Palm wax Warmer Melts, Aromatic Sink Freshener & Gentle Cleansers (these are neat, be sure to check them out!). For bath and body items she makes goat’s milk hand and body oval soap bars (dye free) and goat’s milk Soap on a Pouf, which is similar to soap on a rope but it's on a shower pouf! Her shop also carries Natural Lip Balms (both flavored and unflavored), and Hair and Body Mist with Aloe and Vitamin E.

“I have spent countless hours and many months researching and testing my items to find the best materials available that I can use to create premium quality products at an affordable price. I don't make any item available for sale unless I love it and I have proven through thorough testing that it is a fantastic item!

“My inspiration to create comes from within. I have always enjoyed crafting and creating things; it's a part of who I am. I love the satisfying feeling of making something with my own two hands. For me it's thrilling and exhilarating to create items. It makes me feel good! Also, I always smell great because I spend so much time around fantastic fragrances, that's a good thing!”

She ships internationally. All US orders have flat rate shipping no matter how much you purchase. I know you want to smell good, too, so take advantage of this one-week-only special offer:

15% off ALL items OR Purchase three 7.50oz 100% Soy Jar Candles for only $20.00 (regularly priced 8.50 each) (15% off does not apply to the 3 for $20.00 special, it is already more then 20% savings!)

Special discounts do not apply to shipping. She can send you an invoice reflecting your savings before you make your payment or you can pay for your items and she will refund your savings via PayPal.

Most of her items have a quantity of one listed but she has more! Please feel free to contact her if you would like additional quantities of any item and she will create a custom listing just for you.

Shop of the Week: Joslin Jewels

Sheridan Joslin, of JoslinJewels.etsy.com, creates, in her words, “fine wire wrapped and gemstone jewelry”. But if you take one look at her shop you can see that it involves so much more than that. Just saying “fine wire wrapped and gemstone jewelry” about her shop is like saying the sculpture David was just sculpted out of plain old marble and is no big deal! Her work is intricate. Her work is simple. Her work is the kind of art that the artist makes the infinitely complex look like it took no effort at all to make and that, my friend, is the hallmark of a great artist.
“Whether simple or intricate, I meticulously craft each piece of jewelry I create. I use only fine metals and carefully selected gemstones. Each piece is original and most are one of a kind.”

The earrings pictured above have wonderful lines. I like how the shape of the ear wire comes down and makes the jewels look as if they are in a bowl. The wire wrapping appears flawless. These earrings would go with almost any outfit from daily casual to dressy business to elegant evening wear.

“I love gemstones as much as I love a good puzzle. Making intricate wire jewelry is like a challenging puzzle. It involves shaping and forging straight wire into intricate designs with no soldering -- only wrapped connections.

“It's an art that dates back thousands of years, and many of the techniques used today are the same as those used in ancient times. With only a few simple tools and careful manipulation, a skilled jewelry artist can sculpt wire into beautiful works of wearable art.”
And that is exactly what Sheridan does with her work. Check out her shop and be amazed!

Shop Talk Friday with Purple Lemon Designs

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Well, I am glad you decided to join me for my 3rd installment of “Marketing My Etsy Shop”. We have already covered using Twitter and Facebook as marketing tools in Part 1, and using business cards, an elevator speech and your shop’s packaging in Part 2. Today, we are going to talk about my experiences with Etsy Teams, an email newsletter, as well as blogging. Let’s chat, shall we?
Etsy Teams
I am on three Etsy teams, Team Etsy Mississippi, The Etsy Twitter Team, and The Etsy Wedding Team. I have “met” so many wonderful people through these teams. I have also learned a ton from many of the members.
So, how did I start with Etsy Teams?
Well I first started with my home state’s team. I had no idea what teams were, but I wanted to find out. There had been lots of talk on the forums about teams, so I needed to know more.
A state team is a natural fit for any seller in the USA (I think). I know my state’s membership is open to any one living in MS with a shop on Etsy. I really enjoyed the team camaraderie, and once people got to know me through our Yahoo group, I made sales to many of the members.
While having a great Mississippi team experience, I joined Twitter. Soon after, I stumbled upon the Etsy Twitter Team. I joined up and it is a great team to be a part of. It is probably the most active team I am on because we are all on Twitter so much. We promote one shop each week, we have a very active Google group, and my teammates are experts at getting Etsy Treasuries (which we also tweet about)! I had never been in a Treasury before joining a team (thanks Michelle!), and I am still not sure how all that works, but being a part of great Treasuries has been such an honor since joining a team.
A few months ago, I started selling some of my wedding items. Since I had such good experiences with teams, I applied to be accepted as a member of The Etsy Wedding Team. This team has been a great experience just like the other two. I really like the focused nature of the team. We all design wedding items, so we have lots in common. This team has become very active in the last few weeks, so I am excited to see where it takes us!
A few tips about joining teams:
  • Just as anything else in life, you get out of it what you put into it.
  • Don’t be shy!
  • Just do it.
E-Newsletters
I have put together e-newsletters for my places of employment, but it never dawned on me to put one together for Purple Lemon Designs… until a few months ago. I have only put a few out, but I know that people are clicking through (thanks to Google Analytics). I use Mail Chimp to put my email blasts together. It is really easy to use, and it is free if you send to 100 or less people at a time (up to 6 times a month). You can also customize your blast to look like your blog or your Etsy shop. I know that there are other great services available such as Constant Contact and iContact. I can’t speak about these services, because I haven’t had the pleasure of using them.
This is just another way to contact your customers. Be careful who you send your blast to… you don’t want to violate spam legislation. I only send to people who opt in to my newsletter through a link on my blog, my website’s contact form and my Etsy Shop Announcement. Some people send to people that have purchased from them, but I don’t feel comfortable doing that unless they opt in. The great thing about Mail Chimp or other services like it, they will manage your email list for you. I have a page that is generated by Mail Chimp that subscribers use to sign up. It links directly to my blog. Cool, right?
Blog
Obviously since you are reading this, you know that I blog. Many of you probably blog, too. A few tips that I can give about blogging are:
  • Create an editorial schedule – Readers like to know what you are going to be posting on a regular basis. I have a few different series that I feature on my blog (such as Terrific Tuesdays and Lemony Fresh Etsy Sellers), so my readers know what is coming up.
  • Post on a regular basis – I know that I get tired of keeping a blog that never updates in my daily reads. I don’t necessary mean that you have to post everyday; that is up to you. I am saying that your readers will be more likely to come back to see you if you maybe post once a week or more. Maybe even post on the same day each week. I know that Word Press blogs have this nifty feature where you can schedule your posts. This has really helped me post on a regular basis. I usually write blog posts in spurts, mostly on the weekend. So if I can space out when my posts are published, that is really helpful with my schedule.
  • Read other people’s blogs and comment – This will help make connections with other people across the internet. Always link your blog to your comments. Lots of people like to follow the trails of comment links… You may even gain more readers this way.
  • All posts are better with pictures, especially if you are writing a tutorial.
  • Make sure to add your Etsy Mini to your sidebar.
  • Make it fun!
I hope you have enjoyed my posts about Marketing my Etsy shop. Let me know if you have questions by posting in the comments below.
Toodles!
Punky Jane Helps Stylestance with Giveaway
Our very own Punky Jane is helping our good friend/blog, Stylestance, with their very first giveaway! Sandy donated a "Peace Copper Suncatcher with Pearl" necklace to celebrate the milestone for Stylestance getting 100 followers to their blog.
Stylestance has been good to the Etsy Twitter Team members featuring several of our members over the past few months. So I thought I would support them by plugging their contest and celebrating with them.
So get over there and follow Stylestance for an entry into the giveaway and leave a comment to let them know. You can also earn more entries by blogging and putting their blog badge on your own blog. Entries must be received by midnight this Monday, September 21st. The winner will be chosen randomly and announced on Tuesday.
Good luck!!
Shop of the Week: Handmade by Sandi
Sandi Myers, of HandmadeBySandi.etsy.com, creates wonderful handmade items. Her shop is a smorgasbord of crocheted items, shawls, coffee cozies, felted bowls, earrings, sewn items, and aprons. Her talent is amazing that she makes so many different handmade items!
She takes special care to make the items for her customers as if she were going to use them herself. If she’s not satisfied with them, she won't sell them! Her jewelry craftsmanship is divine. Her felted bowls are a lot of fun! And she makes the cutest aprons for your littlest cooks!
She is always on the lookout for new inspiration. “When ever I see something that has been crocheted - I try to figure out how it's done, and try it. When thinking about my next felted bowl project, I look for unusual containers that I can use to shape my bowls.”
I really love Sandi's felted bowls. This is a relatively new project for her and she's jumped right in trying new things and making great bowls to hold pretty much anything such as your cell phone, jewelry, coins, odds and ends in the kitchen, office, or craft room, and even business cards at craft shows. They are great for kids, too, because it can hold their little trinkets and they can't break the bowl!
Her favorite thing about her craft: “It's relaxing - I enjoy sitting in the evening crocheting something and seeing it come together. When that project is done, I have to decide which one I want to do next - and with so many projects in mind - I'll not run out anytime soon!”
Sandi is also one of the Etsy Twitter Team’s top tweeters! “I tweet when I list a new item, I write about it on Facebook, and try to make my tweets interesting so people might be interested in visiting my shop and finding out more about me!” She’s really good at retweeting other team members’ items and always has a nice word to say about everybody! She’s an absolute delight to work with and I really enjoy having her on our team!
The First Day of School
Ahhh! The first day of school...parents are happy, children are nervous, lunches and new school supplies are packed and ready to go. If you're like me, I start my back to school shopping in the middle of summer. With all the great deals out there (love the 1 cent deals at Office Max and the 25 cent deals at Staples!), I end up overbuying. Well, maybe not??
This year I became an official teacher. However, classrooms are limited and I will just have to wait one more year to find my own classroom, *sigh*. Until then, I am still doing what I love by subbing. So while all the parents are running around getting things together, this year I am putting my feet up and browsing Etsy! Why? Because the holidays are right around the corner (111 shopping days to go!) and the Etsy Twitter Team is having a Back to School Sale.
Why not make it a day with the kids on the Internet, and help them calm the butterflies by letting them pick out one item to work toward as the school year starts? This could be as simple as homemade cup cozies for hot chocolate on cold days at the bus stop. For yourself, a cozy scarf might be the answer! For girls, a barrette, clip, or necklace can add spark to the start of school.
Or super unique buttons!
With cold days right around the corner, parents can stock up with yummy lip balms from Aquarian Bath, at a great price to fit any budget, and just the thing for chapped lips!
One of the things that makes going back to school more fun is the little supplies that have a unique, one of a kind look. When it comes to crafting, you never find two items just alike. Allowing children to show their creativity through these one of a kind bags by Sandi will make their day brighter and the world a little greener.
One of my favorite things during the school year is a new journal/notebook. I love to doodle, make notes of what I can do with my future classroom, lesson plans that pop into my head, or just a note or two to a close friend. Hopefully, your child will be inspired to use these books to work on handwriting, take notes, or write that new story that they have been thinking about. Do I hear pencils moving? Maybe the next JK Rowling is right in your home!
After school is a fun time for kids. Most want to watch tv, hop on the computer, or do some arts and crafts, which are great for babysitters to do with elementary age students ;).
One of the things I always do the night before I leave for school is pack a lunch. Here are some great ways to pack up those yummy lunches and healthy snacks. My favorite snack was always apples with peanut butter and raisins. My mom would make smiley faces out of them :).
Lastly, but so important, MAKE SCHOOL FUN for someone else with handmade items. All of the links above will send you to a shop that is collecting money to help with school supplies this year. It is the team's way of Paying It Forward. We will do the creating while you enjoy the items, knowing that some of your purchases will be going towards school supplies for those who can't afford them in these hard times.
On behalf of the Etsy Twitter Team, have a healthy and safe school year!
Jen
