Instagram Twitter snub not down to Facebook

Instagram chief executive Kevin Systrom says the company's decision to abandon its Twitter feature has nothing to do with the fact that it was recently acquired by Facebook.

Speaking at the LeWeb conference in Paris, Mr Systrom said the decision was taken because he feels Instagram's main website offers a "better user experience" than Twitter as a portal for viewing pictures, and wants all users to be directed there instead.

Instagram pulled the plug on its Twitter cards integration earlier this week, meaning photos uploaded to the social networking site are no longer displayed correctly, and appear badly-aligned or inconveniently cropped.

Users will still be able to link to photographs via Twitter, although these will appear only as a text link that directs viewers through to Instagram's website in order to see the photo.
Facebook recently bought the photo-sharing app and this latest move is sure to heighten tensions between the two social network giants.
